Do’s and Don’ts of Water Damage

4/30/2024 (Permalink)

When faced with water damage in Cecil County, there are ways to prevent and hinder further water or structural damage before help arrives.

Do:

  • Shut off the water supply.
  • Turn off the circuit breakers from any affected areas, only when it is safe to do so.
  • Furniture should be propped up from the floor to prevent content from being affected.
  • Excess water can be mopped or blotted up from surfaces, including furniture.
  • Remove damage-prone items such as paintings and electronics to a dry space away from moisture.

Don't:

  • Do not enter a room with water and electrical components.  This can be highly dangerous.
  • To avoid staining, do not leave rugs or other content on a wet surface.
  • If the ceiling is wet, do not use the ceiling fan.  If a ceiling is beginning to collapse from the weight of water, do not enter that area.
  • Don't wait for assistance!  The longer water sits and has a chance to travel through your walls and floors, the greater the risk of mold later on.

Should you experience water damage, please use your best judgment and leave the rest to a professional!  SERVPRO of Cecil County provides immediate water damage restoration services to local properties.  Our team can determine the best plan of action and guide you through the mitigation and reconstruction process.

What Are Those "Cobwebs"?

3/18/2024 (Permalink)

When your Cecil County property suffers fire damage in the form of a smoke or soot explosion, you may be wondering what those webs are on your walls and ceilings.  Those webs are soot carbon chains which often form when oil explodes out of a heat source, such as a furnace or boiler.

When a heat source is leaking oil or doesn’t function properly, the oil vapors in the system can build up to a dangerous level.  Eventually, the oil will have nowhere to go, leading it to burst out of the system and into your property.  The smoke and soot damage that occurs will quickly find its way throughout a property and onto many surfaces.  The carbon in the soot then begins to strike other sources of soot, which causes the carbon chains that take the appearance of cobwebs.

While this form of fire damage can be overwhelming, there are several actions you can take to help prevent this:

  • Heating systems should be maintained and cleaned annually.  A professional can help to address any issues.
  • Be aware of any signs that your system is not burning oil properly.  Soot can slowly appear on your walls, ceilings or other surfaces when there is a problem.
  • Be mindful of any offensive odors that could mean an oil leak.
  • Check for any signs of debris or buildup.

Should you have a puffback, we recommend hiring a fire damage restoration professional to clean and restore the affected areas.  Improperly attempting to remove soot can lead to additional damage.

SERVPRO of Cecil County offers 24/7 emergency fire damage services for residential and commercial properties!  We provide the utmost urgency and care for your property and belongings.

Preventing Mold Damage in the Spring!

2/22/2024 (Permalink)

Spring brings its own mold challenges.  The rainy season and warmer climate can cause mold to form unexpectedly.  Luckily, there are ways to stop mold in its tracks!

Keep your home dry.

Mold feeds on moisture and wet areas.  Check your property for signs of leaks or cracks along your windows and doors where warm air can get in.

Inspect mold-prone areas.

Mold can grow quickly in places such as bathrooms where shower curtains and wet tiles are present.  Laundry rooms attract mold due to damp clothes or a humid environment, while window sills can collect moisture.  Clean these areas often.

Invest in an air purifier.

These help to trap and eliminate mold spores in a given space in addition to helping prevent those spores from entering a property.

Look for signs of water damage or strange odors.

After a water leak, mold can often be found inside the walls where it needs to be tested by a professional for the degree of severity.  A strong odor can be a questionable concern.

If you suspect mold, act fast!  Mold can spread in as little as 48 hours, but SERVPRO of Cecil County is equipped to respond immediately!  For a free assessment, give us a call!

Preventing Seasonal Water and Storm Damage

2/1/2024 (Permalink)

While we typically think of snow and frigid temperatures this time of year as well as what that may bring, we have also experienced a vast majority of rain this season!  It is important to always remain prepared for any storm when it comes to your Cecil County property.  Below, we list several preventative actions that can help!

When it rains…

  • Clear your gutters and downspouts of any debris to avoid a potential blockage. You should also ensure that your drainage system is pointing away from your property.
  • Make sure that your sump pump is working properly.  We recommend investing in a battery backup to help prevent water damage.
  • Look for signs of leaks. Moisture or wet walls are a bad sign.

 When it snows…

  • Do not let snow accumulate too heavily on your roof. When the snow freezes, the ice can cause a blockage and leave the melting snow to have nowhere to go but into your property.
  • In low temperatures, check for signs of frozen pipes.  This includes strange noises or odors as well as low or no water pressure.
  • Check any signs of roof damage before and after any severe storm. This could save you from water damage later. Look for broken or missing roof tiles or signs of leaks.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is on standby for when water or storm damage strikes!  Should you suffer an unexpected disaster and not know where to turn, give us a call!  We will guide you through the process as we perform the proper cleaning and restoration services!

Severe Storm Damage in Cecil County!

1/17/2024 (Permalink)

Cecil County has suffered multiple severe storms recently, keeping our storm damage restoration team busy day and night.  With over two inches of rain and wind gusts up to 50 mph, storm damage was a given for many property owners.  Power outages led to more problems, including sump pump failures.  In addition, the heavy winds led to downed trees and roof damage.

Like SERVPRO of Cecil County which is always “Ready for Whatever Happens,” emergency personnel in Maryland were prepared for the incoming storms.  The county was put under a State of Preparedness for the most recent weather event in order to have emergency personnel ready in the certain case of storm-related risks, including potential water rescues or damaged power lines.  The tide of local rivers had also risen up to four feet above average, flooding roads and properties located nearby.

It’s been a messy couple of months for the county, but SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to always have a resourceful team on standby for when storm damage occurs!  Should you suffer any extent of flooding or storm damage, please do not hesitate to give us a call so that we can immediately begin the process of restoring your property!

Assisting Through the Disaster!

12/13/2023 (Permalink)

What do you do when you have fire or water damage?

An electrical fire, water leak or structural issue can lead to a big disaster, especially if you don’t know where to turn.  SERVPRO of Cecil County can lift that burden off of you!

Our first step is to visit the site, assess the damage and determine the best plan of action for restoring the property.  We then work with your insurance provider on getting started and ensuring that you are covered for any restoration and repairs needed.

Once the water or fire damage restoration process begins, we utilize our advanced techniques and equipment to remove signs of water and smoke from all surfaces.  We tear out structural components that are damaged such as the drywall, baseboards and trim affected.  The areas that pose a larger threat to the integrity of the structure, such as a ceiling on the brink of collapse, are also removed safely.

As we continue the process of fire and water damage restoration, SERVPRO of Cecil County will continue to check in with you and your insurance company to ensure everything is running smoothly with no concerns.  Our team is here to help guide you throughout this process as we clean up the mess!

Restoring What Was Lost

11/13/2023 (Permalink)

Water damage can be overwhelming for our clients, but what do you do once the water is gone?  During the water restoration process, SERVPRO of Cecil County often needs to remove various structural components of your home or facility, such as drywall, insulation or even the affected flooring.  By removing these elements, water can be found in areas that are difficult to reach where our air movers can then eliminate further signs of water that can cause mold later down the road.

But once this is complete, those areas need to be replaced with new materials.  That’s where our Reconstruction Department can help!  SERVPRO of Cecil County has an entire division focused on your rebuilding needs in order to help make any size disaster truly “Like it never even happened.”  We provide services in areas such as the replacement of insulation, drywall, trim, baseboards, carpets and various flooring.  Our reconstruction team can also help with painting, document drying and furniture restoration.

When it comes to higher scale disasters, we work with our local partners on needs such as boarding up and temporary fencing to secure a property after a fire has occurred.  After a storm, we can also assist with roof tarping and tree removal services.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to have the resources and expertise to handle a water or fire damage disaster from beginning to end in order to help our customers put an upsetting situation behind them!

Cleaning Up A Hoarding House

10/18/2023 (Permalink)

Our team offers biohazard services for properties in Cecil County after severe hoarding has taken place.  Hoarding is a serious health issue that shouldn't be taken lightly.  Often in these sticky situations (and yes, they can be sticky!), we encounter animals, feces and an unsurmountable amount of items we'd rather not discuss.

During this process, our biohazard professionals remove all content in addition to the affected areas that cannot be saved, such as the carpet and floors that may be too damaged.  We place dumpsters onsite, which are filled up rather quickly with the thousands of pounds of trash and hazardous materials inside these types of properties.

Our team also provides advanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures for the areas involved.  Our hospital-grade disinfectant is combined with our IICRC-certified cleaning and wipe down techniques to ensure that the property is left good as new once we leave the premises!

SERVPRO of Cecil County is prepared to assist with your sewage, hoarding or vandalism situation in order to restore the integrity of your property.  We are “Ready for Whatever Happens” in the local area!

Identifying Odors

9/8/2023 (Permalink)

An odor can be a sign of a serious problem in your Cecil County home or business.  Odors should be assessed and handled immediately to help eliminate and prevent further damage.  Should you have a musty smell in your basement for instance, this could be a sign of mold growth.  The stronger the odor, the more likely that you have a significant mold issue.

Other odors to be wary of include a dirty or stale smell that may even smell like rotting plants.  This is a sign of mold damage.

If an area of your home smells like rotten eggs, this could mean that you have water damage.  This odor can be created due to the water and humidity present in those areas.

Strange or oily smells emanating from your boiler or furnace in the winter can be a sign that the oil in your system is building up and potentially preparing to burst out of your heating system.  When this occurs, the smoke and soot damage left behind is called a puffback.

When these odors occur in your property, services should be performed immediately to identify and recover the affected areas.  Should you suspect an issue, SERVPRO of Cecil County can provide a free assessment to determine the source of the problem.  In the event that you suspect mold, we also can provide information for mold testing.  We work with several providers for that service and your peace of mind!

Vehicle Cleaning and Odor Removal

8/23/2023 (Permalink)

When your car suffers a strong odor, SERVPRO of Cecil County can provide odor deodorization services to fully remove any pungent smell.  If rain enters your car through a leak or storm, water and mold damage can occur.  Our cleaning professionals provide thorough cleaning and restoration services in order to remove any form of damage in order to get you back on the road quickly!

Once the vehicle is prepped by the local dealership, we complete our odor deodorization technique using our HEPA vacuums to remove all particles in the space.  Containment is also placed to not allow outside dirt and particles to compromise the cleanliness of the newly cleaned car.  We wipe down and treat the interior of the vehicle to help ensure all potential signs of mold or water damage have been eliminated.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides a variety of cleaning services to our residential and commercial clients.  We are proud to offer assistance to our local area no matter the extent of the damage!

Fire Damage and Demolition!

7/21/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County is continuing the demolition process of a local home after severe fire damage was suffered.  Once the fire was extinguished, our fire damage restoration team arrived on site immediately to assist the homeowners with the next steps to take with their living situation and insurance provider.  We also brought out our preferred local vendor to board up and secure the property right away.

The fire substantially affected the integrity of the structure, so we are working hard to restore and rebuild what was damaged.  Salvageable content has been removed to our off-site facility where it will be cleaned and stored until all repairs are complete and the homeowner is ready to move back into their home.

Our Reconstruction Department will continue the rebuild of the home.  This includes not only the outdoor structural elements, but also the plumbing and electrical components.  Our rebuild department thoroughly restores your home or business back to preloss conditions.  We can handle everything from a new roof to fresh paint.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to offer complete fire damage restoration services to aid with the entire process of restoring your property “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Damage Prevention

7/11/2023 (Permalink)

Several areas in Cecil County have experienced storm damage recently due to lightning, flooding and power outages.  Our storm damage restoration team is always just a call away for when this occurs, but it is also the perfect time to prepare your family and property for the next storm!

  • Inspect the interior and exterior of the structure for issues such as broken or missing roof tiles.  During a severe storm, these can easily break off and cause much worse damage.  Water or mold in your attic can also be a sign of roof damage.
  • Look for any signs of leaks that can lead to further water damage after a downpour.  Wet ceilings or walls are the first sign that water is making its way into your home.
  • Gutters should be cleared of debris as well as loose gutters repaired.
  • Any low hanging tree branches should be trimmed away from the home.
  • Ensure that your gutters and storm drains are properly directing stormwater away from your foundation.
  • Stock up on an emergency kit.  Flashlights, extra batteries, and non-perishable food and water can assist you in waiting out a storm during a power failure.

In the event of water or storm damage, SERVPRO of Cecil County can handle your unexpected disaster and make it “Like it never even happened.”  With our specialized procedures and equipment, we will restore your home or facility to preloss conditions as quickly as possible!

Kitchen Fire Mishaps!

6/8/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County visited a Perryville home that suffered a kitchen fire, leading to smoke damage throughout the entire property.  Our team visited the property immediately to begin the cleanup process and restore the home back to a preloss state.

We have assisted several homes and facilities with their fire damage restoration needs recently, including a home in Elk Mills.  The homeowner’s insurance company asked us to visit the site to complete smoke, soot and odor removal services after an electrical fire in the kitchen.  While the kitchen was the only area that had been significantly destroyed, smoke had made its way into other portions of the home.

Smoke and its odor can leave behind its own substantial effects to a property that suffers from fire damage.  SERVPRO of Cecil County utilizes advanced cleaning and restoration procedures in order to eliminate these effects.  Our air scrubbers are placed in the affected areas for a minimum of three days.  This equipment is used to capture smoke and other harmful particles in the air.

Additionally, we use odor deodorization methods to infiltrate and decontaminate the poor air quality inside of a property.  In some circumstances, we provide an ozone treatment to help fully remove all odor in a space at a more extreme level.  During this process, our equipment uses electricity to alter the components of oxygen in the air until they take the form of ozone.  The ozone then attaches to the odor and eliminates it.  This treatment is hazardous and can only be performed when no one is present on site.

SERVPRO of Cecil County uses many different methods to remove fire damage based on the circumstances of the individual situation.  We are here to answer any questions you may have when smoke, soot or other forms of fire damage are present!

Be Prepared for Hurricane Season!

5/11/2023 (Permalink)

Hurricane season begins mid-May and poses a threat until the end of November.  During this season, SERVPRO of Cecil County recommends to always be aware of the risks for your area so that you are prepared no matter the severity of storms you may encounter.  Be sure to check out Ready.gov to learn more about how you can be prepared for hurricanes and other types of disasters.

The most critical step you should take is to create an evacuation plan for your family or business.  Having an emergency kit handy is also useful in the event of a severe disaster or power outage.  Stay tuned to weather alerts as well as announcements on hurricane watches and warnings so that you can ensure you and your property are ready to brave the storm!

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to travel for storms across the east coast after a natural disaster hits.  We most recently assisted with the storm damage in Fort Myers after Hurricane Ian made its mark as a Category 4 storm.  Our storm damage restoration team spent several weeks helping to ease the burden for many home and business owners that suffered property damage.  We are proud to help those in need when disaster strikes nationwide and in our local area.

SERVPRO of Cecil County also provides a free Emergency READY Profile for businesses so that they can be prepared for when fire, water or storm damage occurs.  This free assessment of your building includes pertinent information such as water and gas shut-offs and emergency contacts so that you can immediately prevent further property damage and therefore minimize the financial burden and downtime of your business.  Should you be interested in this free service, feel free to give us a call!

Sewage Cleanup in Conowingo

4/4/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County has cleaned up our fair share of sewage damage.  Several Cecil County homes were recently affected by septic backups, including this extreme loss in Conowingo.  The toilet had malfunctioned, causing this gruesome sewage mess that should only be handled by professionals.

Our restoration team properly removed the sewage and cleaned the affected areas with our hospital-grade cleaning solution which is also environmentally friendly for those who are sensitive to various chemicals.  Our crew performed top to bottom disinfection of the floors, walls, toilet and bathroom vanity in this space.  This was not the first time the homeowner had suffered this type of damage, so luckily some of the affected areas were already torn out and therefore easier to mitigate.

Incorrectly handling a sewage backup can lead to hazardous health conditions, so SERVPRO of Cecil County always recommends bringing in someone who can handle the loss from beginning to end!  We can also ensure that the proper steps are being taken, such as not running fans that will allow the sewage particles in the air to circulate throughout the home.  We have our own air scrubbers to help capture those particles!  Should you suffer sewage damage, give us a call before taking any drastic steps!

Electrical Fire Safety

2/24/2023 (Permalink)

Electrical issues are not something you should put off, one of the reasons being that it can lead to fire damage.  The National Fire Protection Association states that electrical problems are the second leading cause of home fires.  SERVPRO of Cecil County recommends that you have a certified electrician install, inspect and repair any electrical components in your home to help prevent this often unforeseen disaster.

Some issues that can lead to an electrical fire include:

Power outages

Flickering lights

Significant heat coming from your appliances

A burning smell

Sparks from your outlets or devices

  • Old wiring also has a hard time keeping up with powering your home.  Be sure to update your electrical system as needed.
  • Do not plug extension cords into each other or overuse outlets.
  • Do not use frayed or damaged cords.
  • Light bulbs should not exceed the wattage needed, as this can lead to overheating.
  • Make sure your dryers, microwaves and other appliances are working properly, since faulty appliances can lead to an electrical failure.
  • When using a portable heater, keep it away from flammable materials such as rugs and curtains.  Always unplug them before leaving the home.
  • Make sure your HVAC system, dryer and ducts are clear of dirt, dust and debris that can build up and cause a fire.  Our team provides duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning services to help prevent this!

In the event of an electrical fire, disconnect the power source immediately if possible.  If the power is off, you can use water or baking soda to help eliminate the flames before help arrives.  Once the danger is over, do not re-enter the structure until you are told it is safe to do so.

Electrical fires can cause significant fire damage to your property, but SERVPRO of Cecil County is ready to respond immediately, should you suffer such a disaster!

Preventing Winter Weather Woes

2/8/2023 (Permalink)

Winter has its challenges, and snow has been the last of our worries this season.  Like the quick cold snap Cecil County suffered over the holidays, storm, water and fire damage can often occur quickly and without warning.  To help prevent some of the most common forms of fire and water damage in your property during this time of year, follow these precautionary measures!

Water Damage Prevention

  • A steep drop in temperature means a higher risk of pipes freezing and bursting.  To prevent this, insulate all exposed pipes.
  • Close your indoor valves, but keep your outdoor valves open so water can escape, rather than freeze.
  • Faucets can be opened enough to let the water drip during severe cold conditions.
  • Remember to use a heating pad or hot towel to thaw a frozen pipe before it bursts.
  • Before and after a winter storm, inspect your property for signs of damage.
  • Remove snow from your roof carefully and before it has a chance to weigh down your roof or form an ice dam.  This is when an ice formation blocks the melting snow from traveling to your gutters and drains and the water instead leaks into your property.

Fire Damage Prevention

  • Have your fireplaces, chimneys, furnaces, boilers and other heating systems checked for issues and repaired as needed.
  • Do not overdo it when it comes to your outlets and extension cords.  Do not use broken or damaged wires or plugs.
  • Portable heaters should be shut off when you are not in the room or at home.  Flammable materials should also be kept away from these and other heating systems.
  • Place candles on a sturdy surface and extinguish them before leaving the home.

Should your residential or commercial property experience a water or fire loss this winter, SERVPRO of Cecil County can assist you with every step of the process.  Our restoration professionals are available to respond 24/7 to emergencies in our area.  We also work quickly and efficiently to restore the affected areas while taking your concerns and belongings into consideration.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is here to help when it comes to water, fire, storm or mold damage services in our local communities!

Cold Snap Causes Water Damage over the Holidays!

1/25/2023 (Permalink)

This past Christmas was a bit less festive for many of our local homeowners and businesses who suffered substantial water damage over the holiday and the entire holiday weekend.  Due to the sudden freeze that the Cecil County area experienced over this timeframe, many properties suffered frozen pipes that eventually burst and flooded water into each structure.  Septic backups were another large problem for the area, as were several other water damage-related problems.

The calls kept coming in for our team over the holiday break, but we responded immediately to each loss, even on Christmas Day.  Our water and storm damage restoration crews handle each loss with care and in consideration of your concerns down to every little detail, including the contents inside your home that we understand mean more to you than the structure itself.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to be have the resources and capabilities to respond 24/7 to emergency water and fire losses in our area, and we hope that these services helped to make each one of our customer’s holidays a lot brighter!

Fire Damage at a Senior Living Community

12/27/2022 (Permalink)

We recently produced a fire loss for a home in a senior citizen community in Conowingo.  The fire was caused by a lit cigarette that led to smoke damage throughout the home.  After having issues with another company, the homeowner decided to give us a call.  We were asked to help with the fire damage cleanup right away, so we visited the site immediately to begin restoring the home.

Besides one delay due to the crew discovering insects in the residence while onsite, we completed the fire cleanup on time!  We worked with the customer to get the insect problem taken care of, and the fire damage process continued soon after.  Like many other restoration projects, SERVPRO of Cecil County works with you throughout the project as well as with your insurance company, plumbers, or other contractors that may be needed due to unforeseen circumstances.

This fire restoration cleanup involved removing all signs of smoke and soot from the property using our techniques that do so on a professional level.  Our air scrubbers and odor deodorization equipment eliminated any smoke and odor in the space, while our soot cleaning sponges thoroughly removed any further fire damage that was difficult to see.

This fire damage project was completed on schedule, and we’re happy to say that we left the home as good as new!  Our restoration team is proud to assist Cecil County with their smoke, soot and fire damage needs!

The Cecil County Christmas Parade!

12/16/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County supports our community throughout the year with many events, and Christmas time is no exception!  We were excited to be a part of the Cecil County Christmas Parade held in the Town of North East!  We decked out one of our Production vehicles for the event with some holiday décor and enjoyed seeing the creativity of the many other parade participants as well!

Once the parade began, we had a blast!  Hundreds of local residents crowded the streets of the town and joined in on the fun.  There were also performers throughout the parade showcasing their talent and Christmas joy!

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to be a dedicated supporter of our community through local events and organizations.  We are members of the Cecil County Board of Realtors CARE Committee as well as several Chambers of Commerce in the county.  We are grateful to have the opportunity to support Cecil County in many ways!

A Mix of Water and Mold Damage

11/29/2022 (Permalink)

Discovering water damage and mold growth in your home or business is nothing to delay, especially when they go hand in hand.  Mold can grow quickly and in as little as 48 hours. When hidden water damage is added to the mix, the issue becomes much more serious, since this means your structure has not been fully dried like you had thought.

Hiring a certified restoration professional can help with this issue.  SERVPRO of Cecil County uses advanced drying equipment and mold remediation techniques that can help to remove all further signs of water or mold, even from those hard to reach or concealed areas.

Recently, our water restoration professionals stopped out to a local home that had suffered water damage from a faulty kitchen faucet.  The cabinet was removed, and we discovered this mold along the drywall.  Water had also traveled into the basement of the home.  We began mold and water damage services immediately for this contractor who we have assisted on many occasions for the properties they work on.  All damages were handled properly, and the affected areas were restored to preloss conditions.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides 24/7 services to those who have suffered a water or fire damage event, but we also take as much care in the common issues that arise in our homes and businesses.  Mold remediation, general cleaning, biohazard cleanup and post construction cleaning are just a few of the services we provide to the Elkton area.  Our team strives to help restore any disaster you may suffer as quickly and efficiently as possible!

Seasonal Fire Safety

11/16/2022 (Permalink)

With the fall air beginning to plummet into those brisk nights, we all are beginning to use our heating systems to keep warm.  In order to prevent fire damage during this time, SERVPRO of Cecil County recommends checking your systems regularly and before your first use for the season.  We also would like to remind you to stay safe while in the kitchen this Thanksgiving.  We outlined a few measures you can follow to help prevent fire damage during the fall and winter months.

  • Inspect and clean your chimneys and fireplaces.  Install and replace chimney caps to prevent a blockage of dirt and debris.  This will also continue to allow smoke to exit the chimney properly, rather than throughout your home.
  • Fireplaces should be checked for issues and clogs.  Logs must be positioned properly to help prevent the spread of a fire.
  • Check your heaters and HVAC systems for damages or failure.  Portable heaters should be kept away from curtains, clothing and other flammable materials and turned off when no one is home.
  • Your boiler or furnace will leak oil when not functioning properly.  Check those for any leaks, noises or odors that are out of the ordinary and have any repairs needed completed immediately to prevent a buildup of oil that can lead to soot bursting out of the system.
  • This Thanksgiving, do not leave your cooking unattended, and keep children away from the cooking area.
  • Clean your stove and oven of any grease or cooking oil that could ignite if spills were to occur on the stove.  Towels, oven mitts and other flammable materials should not be placed on or near the stove.
  • Keep the floor clear of items to prevent the risk of tripping.
  • Maintain and test your smoke alarms.
  • During the fall and holiday season, please also remember to be cautious when decorating.  Decorations should be kept at least three feet away from heaters.  Only use holiday lights that are in good condition; no damaged cords.  Do not plug too many appliances into one outlet.
  • If you are enjoying the bonfire season, be sure to never leave the fire unattended or start one in heavy winds.  Bonfires should be kept away from structures.

Should you suffer fire damage this season, SERVPRO of Cecil County can help to restore any extent of smoke or soot damage to your property.  We provide complete fire damage restoration services including structural repairs and odor deodorization services in order to help make your disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Hurricane Ian Storm Damage Recovery

11/4/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently traveled to the areas of Fort Myers and Cape Coral in Florida after the catastrophic destruction left behind by Hurricane Ian.  Our franchise along with many others traveled south to immediately assist those who were left in unfortunate circumstances due to the storm damage.

The hurricane was one of the most profound storms for our nation this year with Category 4 winds and floodwater.  Wind gusts were up to 150 miles per hour, while flooding was measured as high as 15 feet in some areas.  Florida and the Carolinas were affected substantially from the hurricane, but the most impacted area was found in Fort Myers where our team was placed.

The storm damage was immense, but we were proud to have the resources and ability to travel to assist those most in need.  SERVPRO of Cecil County provides storm damage services for when there is a critical need, no matter the extent of the aftermath.  Our storm and disaster recovery team often travels along the east coast for natural disasters, including the drastic flooding in Virginia this year and the recent emergency services needed in Texas.

Is Your Business Covered?

9/8/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know that business interruption insurance is a separate form of insurance coverage from your typical plan?  This additional coverage will help to cover you in the event that your Cecil County business has to close due to unforeseen circumstances.  While typical insurance will cover your structure and content due to events such as fire, water, and mold damage, business interruption insurance will help cover the rest!

When your Cecil County property is forced to close, the effects can be a substantial financial burden on your company.  This type of insurance will help to cover the costs that your business will lose due to its closure.  Damaged goods that would otherwise be sold, the cost of a temporary building while the property is being restored, and even payroll for your employees out of work are all potential benefits of holding this insurance policy.

SERVPRO of Cecil County recommends speaking with your insurance provider in order to determine the best policy for your business and what to expect if an unexpected disaster occurs.  Should your home or facility suffer an unforeseen water, fire or storm damage situation, our restoration team can help restore the property to preloss conditions.  We will work with your insurance provider to help make the process run as smoothly as possible!

Duct Cleaning in Cecil County

8/31/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently received a duct cleaning from a fellow committee member at the Cecil County Board of Realtors regarding a severe duct issue.  The dirt, dust and debris inside the HVAC system had collected so drastically inside of the vents that the air quality was threatening the health of those who resided in the home.  In this type of situation, the dust and particles inside the ducts circulate throughout the system and into the air we breathe, making those who have respiratory issues at an increased risk of illness.

Our duct cleaning process entails equipment including a roto-scraper which travels through the ductwork and removes the dirt.  Our collection system transfers the dirt and debris from the vents and into a collection container.  Air is then then filtered through our HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of particles in the air.  This process helps to create a safe, clean and healthy environment for your property.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides a variety of cleaning services to the local Elkton area including carpet cleaning, VCT/Tile and Strip & Wax floor cleaning, post construction cleanup, and deep cleaning from top to bottom of your property.  We are here to help no matter the extent of your damage!

Severe Sewage Damage in Rising Sun

7/29/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently visited a property in Rising Sun after a substantial sewage back up had affected several areas of the home.  One of our local insurance agents requested our assistance for a client, and our professionals responded immediately to help resolve the issue.

The sewage damage had traveled from the bathroom into the basement, creating a rather hazardous situation for the residents.  As an IICRC-certified team, our biohazard professionals use industry standards to help remove all signs of sewage through advanced mitigation and cleaning techniques.

We dry and monitor the affected areas in addition to thoroughly removing any signs of bacteria and other microorganisms from all surface areas.  Our hospital-grade cleaning solutions are another industry standard that help to restore a property to preloss conditions.  This helps to create a safe and healthy environment in the process.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides sewage, biohazard, vandalism and other services for residential and commercial properties throughout the Elkton area.  We respond 24/7 to your particular disaster needs!

Washing Machine Causes Water Damage

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County helped to restore this kitchen and other areas of an Elkton home after severe water damage had occurred.  The washing machine had flooded three stories of the property including through several ceilings.  This left the home with a heightened risk of a ceiling collapse as well as the potential for mold growth.  Our water restoration professionals visited the scene immediately in order to assess all of the water damage and to determine the best plan of action for providing mitigation services.

Not long after, our team began the process of removing the water damage from all affected surfaces.  This often includes demolition services for areas such as the drywall and baseboard.  We use an advanced drying method to help fully remove all signs of water droplets and moisture.  We monitor this equipment for approximately three days, or more if needed.

Once the areas are effectively dried to industry standards, we thoroughly clean and disinfect the space.  Our reconstruction department also offers services for repairing and replacing all of the areas affected in order to help fully restore a property to preloss conditions.  SERVPRO of Cecil County can handle any extent of water damage that you may face, and we are here to help make the process less overwhelming.  Our emergency response team is available 24/7 for your residential or commercial needs!

Three Levels of Cleaning

6/30/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County specializes in cleaning services for a variety of needs in our community.  Our team can handle services including carpet cleaning, HVAC duct cleaning, biohazard and hoarding cleanup and post construction cleaning.

During the cleaning process, we utilize several methods to help eliminate all potential signs of dirt, dust, and bacteria from all surface areas.  There are three cleaning levels:

Sanitize

Enough microorganisms are destroyed in order to promote good health.  Not all bacteria is removed.

Disinfect

99.9% of microorganisms are eliminated.  This level rids surfaces of harmful bacteria and viruses using harsher chemicals.

Sterilize

All microorganisms are destroyed.  This is the highest level of cleaning and is used in hospitals and other commercial settings.

SERVPRO of Cecil County often assists commercial facilities with their cleaning matters on the basis of urgency in order to minimize the damages and help keep the business open.  We offer hospital-grade and environmentally friendly cleaning solutions to help restore your Cecil County property from bacteria, viruses, dirt, and dust.  We also provide emergency response services for more pressing situations in order to help maintain a healthy and safe environment.

Lightning and Storm Safety

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

When it comes to lightning, SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind everyone to please stay safe and follow all protocols in the event of storm damage.

One solution to help keep your Cecil County home safe from lightning is to install lightning rods.  These are used to intercept a strike and help force the energy safely away from your property.  While lightning rods can help prevent a direct lightning strike that can lead to a power outage or even fire damage, it isn’t always enough.  A complete protection system may be needed to prevent even further storm damage.

We recommend that you stock up on supplies for an emergency kit before a storm occurs. Items such as flashlights, extra batteries, a radio, non-perishable food and water should be easily accessible for those in your household or business.

In the event of fire or storm damage, a property should not be entered until you are told it is safe to do so.  These damages are often overwhelming, but SERVPRO of Cecil County can work with you and your insurance provider to make the process run smoothly.

Restoring a Perryville Home After Fire Damage

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

After a large fire in a Perryville home, SERVPRO of Cecil County received a call from one of our local insurance agents to help assist with recovering the property.  Multiple areas of the home were affected from floor to ceiling with fire damage.  Our team began the fire restoration process with our board up services in order to secure the structure.  We removed all signs of fire, smoke and soot damage from the affected areas utilizing our techniques as outlined by organizations such as the IICRC.

Due to the fire suppression necessary in order to put out the flames, the home had also suffered water damage to areas including the insulation, drywall, trim and floor.  We removed those materials in addition to other damaged components of the home, including the cabinets.  Once all damaged areas were removed and all signs of water damage were eliminated, we sealed the walls, ceiling and other areas with our anti-microbial coating in order to help eliminate the risk of moisture and further water damage.

During our fire restoration services, we also found asbestos and mold growth while removing the floor.  We removed the affected areas and utilized our HEPA Vac to help capture the mold spores in the air.  This was an ongoing project for the homeowner due to the overwhelming amount of issues we discovered, but we also provided reconstruction services as the final step in restoring this home to preloss conditions.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to assist our local Elkton area with their fire, water, mold and cleaning needs!  Our team is fully equipped to respond to your local emergency at a moment’s notice, and we do so for both residential and commercial clients.

Restoring Your Elkton Business Files

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

During a major fire or storm disaster, SERVPRO of Cecil County understands the complexities of your Elkton business go further than the structure itself.  During these types of disasters, content is often compromised such as your important office records.

While these files are often salvageable, it is best to prevent the loss of important files in the event of an emergency.  Place documents in an online platform such as Google Drive or Dropbox.  Storing and backing up your files electronically is a smart and time-saving way to help reduce the effect of a major event on your overall business.

For extensively damaged records, there are a few options that SERVPRO of Cecil County provides for recovering the files.  These options include Vacuum Freeze Drying.  This process of sublimation allows documents to be restored by turning the materials directly from a solid into a vapor, skipping the liquid stage.  Another method that we use is Gamma Irradiation, the process of cleaning and disinfecting documents that have been affected by bacteria.

There are several options for restoring your files, but the best option is to digitize the files in advance.  Preparing for a fire, water or storm event is the best action you can take in order to minimize and prevent damage for your business and its protocols.

Should your Elkton business suffer any type of damage to your property or content, SERVPRO of Cecil County can assist you with all facets of your business.  Our restoration team provides cleaning and recovery services for many forms of content, and we can even provide storage services while your facility is getting back to normal.  To learn more, give us a call at 410-620-3322!

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently visited a home that had suffered water damage in North East.  Three inches of water had traveled to two areas of the home, damaging the floor and other surfaces.  Our team visited the property immediately to begin the water restoration process.

We began with removing all elements of the home with water damage, including the insulation, paneling, baseboard and drywall.  Once the water was extracted from both the hard surface floor and carpeted areas, we then placed an air mover and dehumidifier in the affected space for a 24 hour period.  This drying equipment will allow the damaged portions of the home to fully dry as well as help eliminate the risk of future water or mold damage.  Our restoration team then completed the process with properly cleaning the surfaces and floors of the structure.

During the water restoration process, we also offer reconstruction services for repairing all damaged areas of a home.  Drywall installation, floor repairs, and painting are just a few of the services we provide for a complete restoration of your home or business.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is prepared for any extent of water, fire, mold or storm damage in our North East area!

Mold Damage in Elkton

4/8/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County visited a local home in Elkton after the homeowner discovered mold along the framework of their windows.  After our professionals had removed some of the drywall in those areas, we also discovered that the wood on the ceiling was saturated.

Our mold remediation team used our HEPA Vac, air scrubbers and dehumidifier in the affected areas, removed all damaged drywall and dried all of the areas until the structure was dry and the moisture mitigated.

SERVPRO of Cecil County practices several preventative measures to ensure that a home is fully safe and healthy for those who enter.  In addition to our equipment, we place a containment barrier between the affected areas and the rest of the home on every mold remediation project.  This ensures that mold or airborne contaminants do not enter unaffected portions of a property.

To ensure that any mold is remediated, we also apply our environmentally friendly anti-microbial cleaning agent to the damaged areas.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is happy to assist our Elkton community with their mold damage needs, no matter how large or small!

Fire Damage Prevention in Cecil County

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind our local Elkton community to follow safe actions this spring in order to prevent fire damage.  During the spring season, the weather and humidity can lead to a risk of a fire.  Below, we outline some steps you can take for your Cecil County home or business in order to prevent a fire damage event.

  • Remove flammable materials from close proximity to your home.
  • Maintain a safe distance between your grill and property.  Should flames begin to grow out of control, they can potentially travel onto a structure.  Never leave your grill unattended.
  • When using a fire pit, they should be placed away from trees and the property.  When the bonfire is complete, all signs of the fire should be fully soaked with water in order to eliminate the risk of a fire after the area is left unattended.
  • Be aware of windy weather, and do not grill or start a bonfire during this time.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides complete fire cleanup and restoration services in our Elkton area.  This spring, we hope that everyone follows the proper precautions and remains safe.  Should your property suffer fire damage, our professionals are ready at a moment’s notice!

Bonfire Fire Prevention

3/18/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind our local Elkton community to practice safety when beginning to use bonfires this spring.  By following the proper safety precautions, a fire damage event can be prevented as well as your property left in tact.

  • Do not leave a bonfire unattended.  During windy weather, fires should not be started since the flames can travel onto a structure.
  • A water source should be left nearby in case of an emergency.
  • Do not add all burning materials to a fire at once.  This will prevent a large flame.
  • Do not burn chemicals.  These can create hazardous fumes as well as allow a fire to spread quickly.
  • When you are finished with the bonfire, ensure that the entire fire is extinguished.  This includes the ashes as they can spark and ignite.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides immediate fire restoration services for those in need in our Elkton area.  Smoke and soot removal, odor deodorization and reconstruction are some of the services we offer in order to help fully restore your property after fire damage.

Maintaining your system and resolving any issues with the sump pump can prevent water and structural damage to your Cecil County home or business.  Our team is here to help before the problem starts.

  • Selecting the proper sump pump is important.  The pump should be able to handle the amount of stormwater that our Cecil County area experiences throughout the year.
  • Installation of the sump pump is also important in preventing water and storm damage issues.
  • Clean, inspect and maintain the sump pump every three months in order to ensure that the system is running efficiently.
  • Check for issues with the device, such as a damaged switch or clog that reduces the effectiveness of the system.
  • A grate can be installed in order to stop debris from building up in the system.

Identifying Your Water or Storm Damage

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

When your Cecil County property suffers a storm damage event, it is critical to identify the type of stormwater involved.  This will help you to determine the proper restoration techniques to use in order to maintain your health and safety.  SERVPRO of Cecil County completes water and storm restoration services based on the type of water associated with the loss:

Clean Water

Water from rainfall or a broken pipe is considered clean water.  This is safe to those inside the property.

Gray Water

Stormwater can grow bacteria and become a health concern as it is left untreated.

Black Water

Water that is filled with bacteria, chemicals or other dangerous contaminants can pose a large health concern.  This type of damage should only be handled by a certified professional.  Sewage is one such example of substantially harmful water.

Should you suffer stormwater damage, you should always hire a restoration professional to handle the loss for you.  SERVPRO of Cecil County handles large and small stormwater disasters for our local Elkton community utilizing our advanced techniques and equipment.  We follow the proper restoration and health guidelines as outlined by organizations such as OSHA and the IICRC.

Protecting Your Cecil County Business from Fire Damage

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Cecil County, we understand that fire damage is not a topic that business owners like to discuss.  However, it is a necessary issue to address.  Preventative actions and emergency procedures should be discussed and put into place in order to keep your employees and clients safe.

A Frozen Pipe Causes Storm Damage to an Elkton Home

1/26/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently responded to a home in Elkton after a pipe break had caused the basement to flood.  Due to the extreme cold, the ceiling pipe had froze and busted, leaking water into all areas of the space.  Our storm restoration team responded to the damage that same day in order to immediately resolve and prevent further issues.

Due to a lack of electricity in the basement, we supplied power and lighting while completing the services.  Our storm damage team removed all affected areas, including the carpet, pad, drywall, insulation and trim.  Water was extracted from both the carpet and hardwood surfaces.

The drying process was a bit more extensive.  Eighteen air movers and two dehumidifiers were needed in order to fully remove all hidden signs of water damage.  This drying equipment was placed in the home for four full days.

There was also a substantial amount of pet feces in the basement, creating a bit more of an issue.  Our team removed the filth and cleaned all areas following the proper restoration guidelines.  With these protocols, we apply an environmentally friendly anti-microbial cleaning solution to the affected areas.  Once the water and feces were eliminated from the space, the home was finally restored and better than before!

Storm Damage Tips

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

During a storm damage disaster, the process can be very overwhelming.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is here to help make that process run as efficiently as possible.  During the restoration process, it is critical to take action immediately and minimize the damages.  Should your Cecil County home or business suffer water or storm damage, there are several actions you can take to prevent further issues.

  • Hire a restoration professional to remove all signs of water.  Water can hide in the walls, floors and other areas.  By hiring a professional that utilizes equipment such as air movers and dehumidifiers, all signs of water will be eliminated.  This will prevent further water damage or future mold growth.
  • Before help arrives, remove all excess water by mopping and blotting the affected areas.
  • Furniture should be propped up from the floor to prevent content from being affected.
  • Important documents, artwork and electronics should be moved to a dry place where there is less moisture.
  • To remain safe, turn off the power for water damaged areas of the home or facility.  Do not enter flooded areas where electrical components have been exposed to water.
  • If a ceiling is wet or beginning to collapse from the weight of the water, do not enter the room.

Once the storm damage has been done, SERVPRO of Cecil County will visit your property immediately in order to determine the extent of the damage and the best actions to take.  We also offer a Reconstruction Department for all installation and renovation needs such as roof repairs and carpet installation.  Our water and storm restoration team is always prepared to respond at a moment’s notice for when we’re needed the most.

Winter Storm Damage Prevention

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County is always prepared for winter weather and the risks it brings to your home or business.  The cold temperatures and snowfall often lead to water damage issues such as frozen pipes and roof leaks.  Should you suffer water or structural damage in our Cecil County area, our storm restoration team can immediately visit your property to complete the proper mitigation, drying and cleaning techniques.  We can help to fully restore any extent of storm damage that occurs in our local area.  Below, we list several steps you can take in order to prevent significant water and storm damage.

  • Check for signs of frozen pipes.  Insulate exposed pipes to prevent pipes from freezing and breaking.
  • Open your outdoor valves and let the water inside the pipes drain.  Open your faucets to allow water to slowly drip out of the pipes.  This will help to prevent water from building up and freezing during frigid temperatures.
  • Inspect your property for signs of damage.  Roof cracks, broken shingles, and improperly sealed walls are several factors that can pose a potential storm damage risk.  All issues should be repaired before a winter storm.  You should also inspect your property for structural issues after a storm.
  • Snow should be removed from a roof before it has time to collect substantially and potentially cause a roof leak or collapse.  Removing snow will also prevent risks such as ice dams from forming.  These dams prevent water from draining through your drainage system and instead to leak into your property.

SERVPRO of Cecil County offers immediate emergency storm damage services for our local community.  In the event of extensive winter storm damage, our team can quickly help to restore your home or business.  Give us a call at 410-620-3322 to learn more!

Preventing the Aftermath of Water and Storm Damage

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Water and storm damage is often the beginning of the problem when it comes to an issue in your Cecil County home or business.  SERVPRO of Cecil County often provides water mitigation and reconstruction services for damaged properties after our customers believe the problem is resolved.  This damage appears in the form of issues such as mold growth and roof leaks.

Mold Growth

When water damage occurs due to a storm, pipe break or other unforeseen event, we often attempt to remove and restore all affected areas ourselves.  Without the proper equipment to remove all signs of water droplets from your property, including in the walls and floors, the water can be left in hidden places where it is difficult to reach.  This often leads to future mold growth in those spaces that can pose a larger risk than the water damage.

Our water restoration team follows IICRC guidelines and utilizes our advanced water mitigation and drying equipment in order to fully and thoroughly remove all signs of water.  We place several air movers in the space for a period of three days in order to do so.

Structural Damage

You should also inspect your property for signs of damage.  Roof cracks or missing shingles pose the risk of water leaking into your home or business.  Wet ceilings, walls or insulation can also mean that water is making its way slowly into the structure.

Our restoration and reconstruction teams can assess the damages for you as well as offer solutions for fully resolving the issue.

Winter Weather

Inspect your property before and after a winter storm.  Check for structural damages and be sure to remove snow from the roof.  A large amount of snowfall can lead to a roof collapse if left to build up or freeze.

During your water damage event, it is not uncommon to miss what lies further.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is here to help find the underlying causes of your structural damage.  Should you suffer further damage down the line after attempting to clean up the mess, our water restoration team is also here to help make it “Like it never even happened” for good!

Fire Safety this Holiday Season

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County hopes that everyone has a wonderful holiday season!  We want your holidays to be safe and free of fire hazards.  Below, the American Red Cross offers some helpful tips on how to keep your family, friends and business safe from fire damage.

  • Christmas trees, candles and other decorations should be kept at least three feet away from fireplaces, heaters and heat vents.
  • Only use lights that are in good condition.  Frayed electrical cords can cause a risk of fire damage.  Do not leave the tree or lights on if no one is present for an extended period of time.
  • Do not use lit candles to decorate a tree.  Candles that are used in your home or business should be extinguished before leaving the premises.
  • Use sturdy tree stands that will not pose the risk of falling over.
  • Do not leave cooking unattended.  Keep materials that can catch fire away from the stove, including towels and pot holders.

SERVPRO of Cecil County is always prepared for fire or water damage in our local Elkton area.  We offer emergency services for your unexpected disaster, no matter the extent of the damage.  Our team is here to help at a moment’s notice and when it matters most!

Types of Smoke Damage You May Encounter

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

When your Elkton home or business experiences fire damage, the smoke damage often leaves more of an effect than the fire itself.  There are several forms of smoke damage a property can suffer.  SERVPRO of Cecil County knows how to properly identify each type of smoke damage during the cleanup process.  This helps to minimize further damage and successfully eliminate all signs of fire damage from your property.

Wet Smoke

This type of smoke damage occurs when materials such as plastic or rubber are burned.  The damage leaves a strong odor and can leave the affected areas sticky, making it more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke

When materials such as paper catch fire, the materials involved burn quickly.  This allows the smoke and heat to rise quickly as well.  Fire damage such as this leads to smoke residue along the ceilings and hard to reach areas of your home or facility.

Fuel Soot

This occurs when you experience a puff back from a furnace malfunction.  When the soot builds up and bursts out of a furnace, it travels throughout your property and can affect every surface of the property.

Fire Residue

Fire residue evaporates and leaves a strong odor behind.  This type of smoke damage is difficult to see and can damage your walls and other areas.

There are many other types of smoke damage that can occur due to a fire, and it is important to hire a fire restoration professional in order to properly handle the cleaning.  Improperly cleaning smoke or soot can cause further damage to the affected areas.

SERVPRO of Cecil County offers 24/7 emergency fire restoration services for our local Elkton area.  We specialize in all fire damage services, including boardup of the affected areas, advanced cleaning treatment and full reconstruction services.  We are here to help when it’s needed the most.

Rising Sun Home Suffers Kitchen Fire

10/19/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, our Cecil County community has suffered several fire-related losses.  One such fire disaster occurred at a home in Rising Sun.  After a fire had began on the stove, the kitchen was left in disarray with substantial smoke and soot damage.

In order to complete full fire restoration services, our SERVPRO of Cecil County team wiped down all affected surfaces including the walls, ceilings, carpets, cabinets and doors of the home.  Smoke and soot can easily travel to every corner of your home, which is why a complete and thorough cleaning is necessary after fire damage has occurred.

In order to capture the fire extinguisher powder and smoke and soot particles that had been circulated into the air during the fire, our fire restoration team utilized our specialized HEPA Vac and also placed an Air Scrubber into the affected areas for a full day.  In addition to utilizing our equipment, we cleaned the air handler and all HVAC vents in the home in order to eliminate any further signs of smoke and soot traveling through the property.  These procedures will ensure that the air quality in the home is fully clean and healthy.

The fire damage could’ve been much worse for this Rising Sun home, so it is important to remember to always attend to your cooking and not leave the room in case of an issue.  Kitchen surfaces should also be cleaned both after cooking as well as periodically in order to ensure there are no signs of grease or cooking oils that can potentially ignite a flame.

SERVPRO of Cecil County offers 24/7 emergency fire and water restoration services for those in need.  Our restoration team is proud to serve the Elkton area with helping to restore any size disaster "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage Prevention

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

October is Fire Prevention Month!  This fall and beyond, SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind everyone to stay safe and follow the proper safety procedures when it comes to fire safety.  According to the National Fire Protection Agency, cooking fires are the leading cause of house fires.   Remember to never leave your cooking unattended, and to be mindful of grilling and outdoor bonfires.

Ensure your fire extinguishers and smoke alarms are working properly.  Install smoke alarms in every room and on every level of the property.  Replace the alarms every ten years and the batteries every six months.

The NFPA also recommends that you create a fire escape plan for you and your family, as well as for your business and employees.  Look at all possible exits, doors and windows, and discuss both a primary and secondary evacuation route for each area with the involved party.

In the event of a fire, determine an outside meeting point after evacuation, and do not re-enter the structure until you are told it is safe to do so.

SERVPRO of Cecil County hopes that everyone continues to follow all safety guidelines for fire prevention!  Should you suffer a fire, smoke or soot issue in your Elkton home or business, our fire restoration team can handle any size event.  Our fire restoration procedures include a full demolition and cleaning of a property or other necessary services such as duct cleaning in order to fully ensure healthy and clean air quality in the space.  Our team is here to help, no matter how large or small the disaster!

Various procedures will be used during the Mold Remediation process including setting containment and utilizing various equipment to prevent the further spread of mold spores in the space.  Our air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums are two such pieces of equipment that we utilize in order to do so.  Our anti-fungal and anti-microbial cleaning treatments are also designed to fully remove all signs of mold and prevent future growth.

The Mold Remediation process is unique to each situation and often involves additional services including the removal of drywall or other structural components where mold may have formed, content cleaning for affected items, and odor removal and deodorization techniques.

Regardless of your level of Mold Remediation necessary, SERVPRO of Cecil County can assist you and help to lessen the stress of the situation.  Our IICRC-trained team is always prepared to handle your mold damage event!

Biohazard and Sewage Cleanup for a Local Municipality!

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently received a call from one of our local Municipalities regarding severe sewage damage in their facility.  Sewage had flowed into two rooms of the facility and required mitigation in addition to a thorough cleaning of the affected areas.  This included the ceiling, floors and content affected.

When sewage is present, it is critical to utilize best practices for cleaning and disinfecting all areas affected by the contamination.  Our IICRC-Certified team applies advanced anti-microbial and anti-fungal treatments in addition to hospital-grade cleaning solutions to fully sanitize and remediate the problem in regards to everyone’s health and safety.

Contaminated sewage water can quickly degrade into a more severe and hazardous issue if left untreated.  Any bacteria present in the sewage can quickly spread and cause health issues.  Therefore, we stress calling a certified professional immediately to resolve the problem before further damage can occur.

Our water restoration crews removed the pad and floated the carpet in several areas in order to fully extract and dry every inch of the home that could have been potentially affected by the water leak.  Treating these areas properly will prevent the risk of further water damage or mold growth.

SERVPRO of Cecil County Encourages Building Safety!

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

May is National Building Safety Month!  This is an initiative created by various organizations to educate homeowners as well as insurance and property management professionals on the proper protocols of building and maintaining a safe facility.  Construction, design, safety, affordability and energy efficiency are key points to focus on when it comes to your home or commercial building.

This campaign stresses the importance of adopting modern and often updated building codes in order to maintain a safe structure.  SERVPRO of Cecil County supports this cause since building codes are a key part of maintaining a facility.  Neglecting the proper protocols for your home or business can lead to water, fire or mold damage, which our restoration professionals are all too familiar with.

Through our Emergency READY Profile Program (ERP), SERVPRO of Cecil County offers a related service where all pertinent information for a commercial building is documented in a digital file in case of a fire or water emergency.  Water shut-off valves, electrical systems and building access are a few standard pieces of information that we gather in order to allow the proper actions to be taken immediately with minimal downtime.  To learn more, click here!

Storm Damage At A Large Retail Facility

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently visited this local retail facility in Texas after the severe winter storm and power outages they suffered had caused the pipes to freeze and break.  This caused a substantial amount of flooding and water damage throughout the building.

Like the thousands of other homes and businesses affected by the storm, water mitigation services were needed immediately for this facility.  Our team traveled to this state in order to assist with the overwhelming damages caused by one of the most large-scale storm disasters our country has faced.

Sump Pump Failure Causes Extensive Water Damage in Hacks Point

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County visited a home in Hacks Point after a sump pump failure caused inches of water to make their way into this basement.  This was an extensive mitigation job for our water restoration team.  It took hours to remove the large pool of collected water from the affected areas.  We also placed our advanced drying equipment for three days to ensure all signs of water damage were eliminated.  This also prevents further water damage and mold growth.

There was a large amount of affected content as well.  While most of this content was too damaged to be restored, we offer a Document Drying method where documents and other damaged content can often be completely restored after fire or water damage.

Fire Damage Prevention With Air Conditioning Units

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is the perfect time to prepare your home for the warmer months upon us.  Using our air conditioning units is one daily routine that we should prepare for with the proper precautions.

Like many household applicances, air conditioners have a risk of starting a fire.  They also cause a substantial amount of household fires during the summer.  Therefore, it is important to hire a certified professional to inspect and repair any issues with the unit before the warmer weather begins.  Below, we list a few preventative actions you can take to prevent fire damage in your Elkton home or facility due to an air conditioning unit.

  • Avoid using the AC unit at all hours of the day.  Overuse can cause the unit to overheat.  Therefore, turning off the unit when the temperature begins to cool down, or when you are not home is a smart and safe way to prevent the unit from heating up.
  • Regularly have your unit inspected and cleaned by a professional.  The unit should be checked for technical malfunctions as well as for dirt and debris that can build up and cause a fire hazard.  The filter in the unit should also be changed each month.
  • Flammable materials such as leaves should be cleared away from the unit.  The buildup on an AC unit can potentially cause fire damage.
  • If you have a window unit, make sure that rain will not drip onto the electrical components.  Extension cords should not be used for window units, since they can overheat.

SERVPRO of Cecil County provides complete fire restoration services to our local Elkton community.  We offer cleaning, smoke and soot removal, and full reconstruction services in addition to other fire damage needs.  Should your Cecil County property experience a fire due to an air conditioner disaster or other issue, our fire restoration professionals are always prepared to help restore your property!

Fire Damage Prevention for Spring!

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is the perfect time to engage in spring cleaning for your Elkton home or business.  SERVPRO of Cecil County would also like to remind you that the spring season can also lead to several risks of fire damage, should preventative actions not be taken.  Below, we list many of the safety measures you should follow in addition to your annual spring cleaning.  These steps will help to eliminate the risk of fire damage in your Elkton home or facility.

  • Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  This process should be completed on an annual basis so spring is the perfect time to start fresh!  Alarms should also be tested once a month to ensure they are properly working.
  • Ensure that your electrical cords are in tact.  Torn or broken cords should be replaced.
  • While spring cleaning your kitchen, be sure to clean areas where cooking ingredients such as grease may have spread.  Grease on a stove can be a large fire hazard when cooking, therefore it is important to always thoroughly clean your stove and kitchen surfaces after preparing a meal.  You should also do the same with your grill, since grease that has collected from the past season can still be a fire hazard.  In addition, the propane tank and all grill features should be checked for issues.
  • Dryers are a leading cause of household fires due to the buildup of lint in the dryer or dryer vent.  Dryer lint, including dirt, dust and other debris, should be removed after each load of laundry.  However, the lint can still reach the dryer vent and cause a clog or fire hazard.  It is recommended that you clean your dryer vent annually.
  • Your chimney should also be inspected and cleaned.  This will confirm that the chimney is safe for the following season.
  • For commercial facilities, check that your Emergency Exit signs are clearly visible so that those in the building will have a clear route of exit in an emergency.  Commercial buildings should always have an emergency plan that all employees are aware of.
  • Inspect your fire extinguishers, and make sure they are in proper working condition.  For businesses, you should confirm that you have the correct amount of extinguishers for your building so that they can easily be found if needed.

SERVPRO of Cecil County understands the risks of fire damage during each season.  By following these spring safety guidelines, your Elkton home or business will more likely experience a risk-free spring!  Should you suffer any size fire, smoke or soot damage, our fire restoration professionals are prepared to help!  We are also happy to provide HVAC Duct and Dryer Vent cleaning services to help prevent or restore your property.

Surprising Mold Growth in North East!

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

Does Your Cecil County Business Need an Ozone Treatment?

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

When your business experiences fire or smoke damage, it often takes more than cleaning the affected areas to fully restore the building for your employees and clients.  Ozone treatment is used in special circumstances where the odor or fire damage is too powerful to be removed on its own.  This method is also used in the event of other offensive odors.

SERVPRO of Cecil County understands how critical it is to keep your business running.  Therefore, we offer our odor deodorization techniques in order to keep your company functioning with as minimal downtime as possible.

Ozone treatment involves a piece of equipment that traps the air in a home or facility.  This machine creates ozone that attaches to the odor in the air and neutralizes it.  This treatment is typically performed for at least a 24 hour time period in order to ensure all signs of smoke odor are gone.

During this process, we also often recommend a duct cleaning since the smoke can enter the system and continue to spread throughout the property.  This process will eliminate further health risks.

Should your business experience fire, smoke or soot damage, or be in need of removing a strong odor, feel free to give SERVPRO of Cecil County a call for a free quote.  Our restoration professionals are happy to discuss our techniques and work with you on what works best for your business!

Preventing Sewage Damage in Elkton

2/19/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage damage can be an overwhelming experience due to its unpleasant nature and health risks.  At SERVPRO of Cecil County, we often restore homes and commercial facilities that have experienced some form of this damage.

Sewage water needs to be properly removed and dried in order to ensure a healthy and safe environment.  The best way to combat this damage is to prevent it in the first place.  Below are a few important actions you can take to help prevent sewage damage in your home or facility.

  • Maintain your sewage pipeline and inspect the system for cracks or damage where contaminated water can enter the system.
  • Dispose of products properly.  Regularly clean your drains to eliminate the risk of clogs.
  • Install plastic piping for tree roots.  Some trees can grow roots that eventually grow into and block your sewer system.
  • Install a backwater valve.  This is used to ensure that sewage exits the system properly.  It also prevents the sewage from entering the system again.

Sewage water is never pleasant.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is here to help, should the need arise.  We offer 24/7 emergency services to those in need regarding fire, water and sewage damage.  We also provide other biohazard services for our local Cecil County and Elkton communities.  Our crew is IICRC trained, meaning we have the proper training and cleaning techniques to fully clean and restore your Elkton property “Like it never even happened.”

Does Your Cecil County Home Experience Flooding Every Time it Rains?

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

Living in Cecil County often brings weather patterns involving various levels of rainfall.  If your home floods each time the rain falls, the repetitive water damage is only the beginning of your problem since this is a sign of an underlying issue.  This recent ceiling collapse in our local Elkton area was caused by significant water damage.  However, storm damage like this can be avoided if the proper precautions are taken.

What Can You Do to Resolve This Issue?

  • Inspect your home for structural issues and signs of water damage including cracks and water marks.
  • Make sure your windows and doors are properly installed and sealed to avoid even a light rain from entering the structure.
  • Check your sewage and plumbing system for maintenance issues or signs of blockage. Clean out your system on an annual basis.
  • Ensure that water is not collecting near your home, but rather flowing away using your gutter system.
  • Connect a drainage system to the sump pump; this allows the storm water to easily escape your home.

Flood water can bring in dirt and other contaminants from outside, and they can be harmful.  Once the water is removed, it is important to remove all signs of water and thoroughly clean all surfaces that the flooding has affected.  Hiring a certified professional is often best for this task.

SERVPRO of Cecil County’s cleaning and restoration team is highly trained to properly handle biohazard, sewage and other storm damage events where the task is a bit overwhelming and threatens the environment of your home.  We clean and remove all signs of contamination from your Elkton property in order to ensure your safety. How To Prevent Storm Damage in Your Elkton Home

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

During a cold snap, your Cecil County home can experience a significant water damage event due to the frigid temperatures.  A substantial snowstorm or even a burst of cold weather can cause a large threat to your home.

One risk of storm damage is the formation of an ice dam.  This is ice that has built up at the edge of a roof and blocks the gutters and other drainage along the roof.  When the snow begins to melt, the water therefore has nowhere to drain and then begins to leak into the structure.  Once the water damage begins to grow, signs of damage can be found on areas such as your walls and ceilings.  If the damage isn’t resolved in time, it can then lead to further water damage including flooding.

In addition, frozen pipes are a significant factor of storm damage during the winter.  If a pipe freezes or breaks, substantial water can leak into your home.  Signs of frozen pipes include no running water, cracked pipes, or wet drywall.  It is important to inspect your pipes during the cold months for signs of this issue.  This photo shows a collapsed ceiling after two pipes froze and broke inside of a local Elkton home, causing extensive damage.

Should you experience any type of water damage this winter, SERVPRO of Cecil County can handle any size storm event from a small leak to a substantial flooding. Our storm restoration professionals are always ready when storm damage strikes.

Preventing a Roof Collapse After a Winter Storm

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

Winter weather can lead to significant structural damage, including a roof collapse.  SERVPRO of Cecil County often answers the call to assist with this type of storm damage, and we immediately offer our roof tarping services in order to eliminate further issues.

These further issues can’t always be avoided, which is when we offer to complete the proper water mitigation and reconstruction services that often are caused from a roof collapse.  Our Reconstruction Department can even repair or replace your entire roof if needed.  However, we hope to see extensive damage such as this prevented before it can appear.  Below, we list some preventative actions you can take in order to avoid a roof collapse from snowfall.

  • Inspect your roof for issues and make the proper repairs.  Look for warning signs such as cracked or bent walls, wet roof tiles, or leaks.
  • Ensure that your attic is insulated correctly.  This will help to melt the snow quickly and more efficiently to prevent any storm damage.
  • Business owners should have an emergency plan for all storm damage and the proper snow removal protocol.  This plan should be finalized before the winter season begins.
  • Clear out all dirt and debris from your drains and gutters.  When the snow melts, this allows the water to easily flow away from your property and therefore not cause a clog or water collection around the structure.
  • Do not allow snow to accumulate too extensively on the roof.  The weight of the snow can cause a collapse.  In addition, the melting snow can leak into the property, should there be cracks or other structural damage.
  • When removing snow from the roof, remove it carefully and in layers on each side of the roof to maintain an equal weight on each side.  Do not remove all signs of snow; two to three inches should be left on top of the structure.

SERVPRO of Cecil County offers 24/7 emergency response for roof damage and other storm related events.  We also provide residential and commercial properties with fire, water, mold and cleaning services for any extent of damage.

Sewage Damage in Cecil County

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

After the sewer line broke in a local Elkton home, we were called out to perform mitigation services for the contaminated water and repair the damages.  The sewage had affected a substantial amount of the affected areas.  A flood cut was needed in order to fully extract all of the sewage water and dry the structure.

Flood cuts involve removing the drywall up to a higher level than the portion of the wall where the water or sewage damage stopped.  We remove this drywall in order to clearly look for signs of moisture or water issues that we couldn’t see otherwise, therefore eliminating water or mold issues in the future.  Flood cuts are also needed when sewage water is present, since this type of damage contains bacteria and other contaminants that can escape into the drywall and be harmful.

Once that was complete, we were then asked to complete the reconstruction portion of the damage.  This includes replacing and restoring the drywall, insulation and flooring of the structure.  We are currently performing those services for the homeowner in order to fully make this sewage disaster “Like it never even happened.”

When your home or business experiences sewage damage, it is critical to hire a certified restoration professional to handle the damages in order to avoid cross-contamination.  Our team properly contains the affected areas in order to prevent the risk of exposure of the bacteria that is present.  We also follow IICRC standards in disinfecting and restoring the property.  This includes utilizing our air movers to fully eliminate any moisture in the space and to help prevent mold growth.  We also properly dispose of damaged content, and complete odor deodorization services.

SERVPRO of Cecil County handles sewage damage in addition to other water damage and biohazard events.  Our professionals handle the entire project from cleaning to mitigating the issue, and we are here to help!

Signs of Frozen Pipes

1/15/2021 (Permalink)

During the winter, frozen pipes are often an issue due to the low temperatures.  SERVPRO of Cecil County receives countless calls to assist with water damage due to frozen pipes.  This situation is an overwhelming one for homeowners and businesses, and it can lead to a large financial and stressful problem.  While frozen pipes are a significant problem in the winter, there are many signs you can inspect your property for so that you can stop the problem before it begins.

No Running Water

A common sign of a frozen pipe occurs when you turn your faucet on, only for no water to come out.  If the water pressure is low, this is also a warning sign that the pipe may have frozen or broken.

Cracked Pipes

This occurs when the pressure inside the pipe increases to a dangerous level that can possibly cause a pipe break.  This can lead to a large water damage situation if the water supply line is not shut off in time.

Signs of Water Damage

Inspect the interior of your property and look for signs that the water has been leaking such as wet drywall or water marks on the ceiling.  You should also check the interior and exterior of your home or facility for signs of water collection.

Frost on the Pipes

Frost, condensation or a misshapen pipe are all signs of a frozen pipe.  If you are able to see that your pipes are frozen, be sure to fix the issue before it gets worse.

Strange Odors

When a pipe freezes, the water will begin to build up, which can lead to an odor.  This is most prevalent in a sewer line pipe freeze, since this leads to a stronger odor.

Odd Sounds

If you have ice in your pipes, you may begin to hear banging or another type of odd noise from the ice inside the pipe.  Your hot water heater may even begin to make unpleasant sounds.

Always remember to check for signs of frozen pipes in the winter and seek the proper assistance for pipe issues or breaks.  Should you experience a frozen pipe, follow the proper actions to prevent further damage.  These include opening the faucet to allow the water to flow through the pipe, as well as applying heat to the pipe until the water begins to flow more naturally.

If the problem persists and a pipe break or water damage occurs, SERVPRO of Cecil County can help with the damage.  We are here to help with any size water damage event this winter and beyond!

Electrical Fires and Soot Damage

1/8/2021 (Permalink)

This holiday season, SERVPRO of Cecil County visited a home in Warwick that had been damaged due to an electrical fire.  The blower cord next to the fireplace had malfunctioned, causing an explosion of soot to travel throughout the property.

If soot cleaning is improperly handled, it can lead to more damage so it is always best to hire a certified professional to perform the soot removal.  Soot is comprised of many pollutants, including chemicals, acids, and metals.  When these pollutants are mixed with humidity, they can become acidic.  Therefore, it poses a threat to your health regarding respiratory issues as well as air pollution.

Soot damage such as this can also lead to carbon chains.  This type of damage looks like spider webs and occurs when the carbon in the soot collides with other soot matter.  The chains then form along your walls, ceilings and other affected areas.

Our team eliminated all signs of soot damage for the homeowner.  During this process, we first pre-test the extent of the damage using dry cleaning sponges.  We often can’t see the soot on a wall or surface, so these sponges allow us to properly discover where the soot has spread to.  Once we have a thorough idea of where it has collected, these sponges are then used to remove the soot particles from the affected areas.

When this process was complete, we also completed our odor removal services and left the home good as new!

We offer this service to our Cecil County community among our other complete fire damage restoration services including cleaning and sanitizing services, and reconstruction.

Outdoor Bonfire Safety

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County hopes that everyone is enjoying the fall season, which is a great time to enjoy the cooler weather with friends and family.  One popular way to do just that is with a bonfire.  We would like to remind you to always follow the proper safety precautions when participating in a bonfire, so that you can remain safe.

  • Never light a bonfire during high winds that can cause the flames to spread onto a roof or other structure.
  • Fires should be watched at all times, and children should be kept away from the flames.
  • A hose or other source of water should be stored nearby in the event of an emergency.
  • Flammable chemicals should never be burned, including products such as hairspray or paint.  These chemicals can create an uncontrollable fire quickly in addition to causing toxic fumes.
  • Gradually add what you are burning; do not add everything all at once as this can cause a sudden large flame.
  • Before walking away from your bonfire, pour water over the flamed area and brush the ashes around the pit with a tool such as a shovel to ensure that they will not pose a risk.

Bonfires can be a fun but dangerous event when it comes to you and your home.  We hope you will follow these safety tips in order to keep everyone safe during this fall season.  If you experience any type of fire damage, our fire restoration professionals are here to help with our 24/7 emergency services.  In addition to fire restoration, SERVPRO of Cecil County is proud to service our local area for water damage, mold remediation, general cleaning, and more!  For more information, give us a call today at 410-620-3322.

Fire Prevention Tips for Fall

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

As the weather changes this fall and into the winter, SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind you that fire can often pose a risk during this time of year.  We have listed a few preventative actions you can take in order to prepare for the temperature drop and keep you and your family safe.

  • Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should have their batteries checked and replaced on a yearly basis.  We recommend doing this before the start of the frigid temperatures when your heating systems are used the most.
  • Have your heaters and heating systems inspected and cleaned.  These systems are often a leading cause of household fires so preventative measures are essential before you turn your heat on for good this season. Have your fireplace checked as well for signs of issues.
  • Keep any portable heaters away from flammable materials including curtains and clothing.
  • Eliminate the risk of a structural fire by clearing out dirt, debris, and leaves from your roof and gutters.

Fire Damage Prevention in Fall and Winter

9/30/2020 (Permalink)

Fall is here, and with that comes cooler temperatures and the inevitable winter cold.  As the temperature declines, we will all start to use our heating systems in order to brave the frigid weather.  SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind you to stay safe while keeping warm by following a few tips below in order to prevent fire damage from a heating device in your home or business.

Before the cold season starts and you begin to use your HVAC heating system, it is important to have the system inspected for issues, as well as serviced if needed.  Once this system is efficient, filters should be replaced in order to help guarantee a safe heating unit in your home and eliminate the risk of a fire hazard.

Portable heaters will become a popular item in households and business offices as the winter months approach.  It is important to have these cleaned and checked annually for signs of issues.  Remember to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from the heaters including curtains and clothing.  If the heater is in an office, employees should turn the device off before exiting the building.

Smoke alarms should also be tested and batteries checked and replaced if needed.  This process should be completed annually, so the beginning of the fall or winter season is a perfect time to do so in order to prepare for when these systems are often needed the most.

SERVPRO of Cecil County specializes in fire cleanup and restoration.  Our professionals can handle any size fire damage event from a slight smoke odor to a fully encompassed building fire.  We are here to help pick up the pieces with our 24/7 emergency services.

This fall and winter, we hope everyone stays warm and safe.  Should you experience fire, smoke or soot damage however, we are here to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing Roof Damage to your Cecil County Home

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County often receives calls from our local residents about roof damage to their homes.  During hurricane season and strong storms, this damage is extremely common.  Often, this damage can lead to water damage and flooding in your home as well.

As storms continue to occur in our area, our water and storm restoration professionals would like to remind you to inspect your property for any signs of roof or structural damage, or have a certified professional visit your home in order to take a closer look.

  • Check your roof for broken or missing shingles or flashing.  This issue can cause strong storms to destroy parts of your roof as well as allow water to enter your home.
  • Be mindful of water collecting on your roof.  This can mean that your roof is susceptible to leaks and therefore water damage.
  • Gutters should also be checked and repaired if they are loose as well as cleaned to ensure they are not clogged.  This will ensure that water is being carried away from your home during a storm.
  • It is important to trim any nearby trees and keep branches and limbs away from the roof.
  • Inspect your attic as well for signs of roof damage by checking for signs of water or mold on the ceiling.

Preparing Your Business For Hurricane Season

6/9/2020 (Permalink)

Guidelines for Fire Safety

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

Our fire restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County know better than most that fire damage can be extremely overwhelming for those involved.

Before you need to call for fire restoration services, we want to ensure that you and your family or employees are safe from harm.  The American Red Cross provides important fire safety guidelines that should be taken before, during and after a fire that will help to keep you safe and prepared.

Before a fire, you should take the steps necessary in order to be prepared in the event of an emergency.  Install smoke alarms on every floor.  Test the alarms on a monthly basis, and change the batteries as needed.  Plan and practice an escape plan with all family members or employees.

In the event of a fire, leave the building immediately.  Do not open doors that feel warm.  Do not leave the building through smoke-filled areas unless it is the only option.  If that is the case, be sure to stay low to the ground and underneath the smoke.  If there is no escape route possible, keep doors closed and place a wet towel under the door.  Call the fire department and open a window to call for help.

After a fire, you should cool and cover any burns you may have and seek medical help if the condition is serious.  Communicate with others that you are safe and do not reenter the property until you are told by authorities that it is safe to do so.

These guidelines are critical in maintaining your safety in the event of a fire. Once the damage is done and emergency personnel has done their part, our fire restoration professionals are here to help with the rest!  SERVPRO of Cecil County is happy to help restore homes and businesses in our local area from any size fire damage event.  This includes smaller scale work such as smoke odor and soot cleanup in addition to complete fire restoration and property reconstruction.  We offer 24/7 emergency services for when disaster strikes, and we’re always ready to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Safety During a Tornado

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County is always prepared to help when a storm disaster strikes.  Natural storm events such as tornadoes are common during this time of year through the United States, so it is important to be ready if one strikes in your area.  When tornadoes wreak havoc in our area of Cecil County, our storm restoration professionals are quick to help restore the damages.  We want to help make even the destruction from a large scale storm “Like it never even happened.”

Accuweather forecasts an average of 1,350 to 1,450 tornadoes for this year with active weather to be continued mainly across the South in March and early April.  However, tornadoes are still a possibility in our local area, so it is critical to be prepared in case of a storm emergency.  Some of the important steps you should take in order to be prepared and remain safe in the event of a tornado are outlined below.

  • Follow updates on the storm and listen for evacuations in your area.
  • Create an emergency kit of supplies including a list of emergency numbers as well as flashlights, blankets, extra clothing and non-perishable food items in case of a power outage.
  • Communicate an emergency plan with your family in case of a storm.
  • During the storm, stay out of rooms with windows and evacuate to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor.
  • If you are evacuated, do not enter the area of the storm or your home until it is declared safe to do so. Have a professional inspect your home for structural damage as well.

SERVPRO of Cecil County understands the devastation that occurs after these storms, and we are here to help when we are needed the most.  We offer 24/7 emergency services for the Cecil County area for storm damage.  Contact us at 410-620-3322 to learn more.

Restoring Your Books After Water Damage

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

When water enters your home and destroys your belongings, it can be an overwhelming experience.  SERVPRO of Cecil County understands how difficult it can be to throw your damaged contents away.  What some people may not know is that you can still save some of your damaged content after it has been severely damaged. Our cleaning and restoration professionals not only help to clean and restore your home from fire, water or mold damage, we also can pack up, store, clean and restore some of the items damaged after these types of disasters.

While there are times we can save your items for you, other times the damage is too extensive to restore them.  But, there are also steps you can take as well to save even your paper products, such as books.

If your books aren’t heavily wet, simple air-drying can be the solution.  Wet paper tears easily so be careful when handling.  When air-drying, do not open the books.  Place them standing up on absorbent paper to allow the water to drain out. Place paper between the text and covers and change the papers as they become fully wet.  Use fans to circulate air but do not point them directly at the books.  Continue this technique until the items do not appear to be soaked.

Freeze drying is the best option for preventing damage and mold growth.  SERVPRO uses the process of sublimation which skips the liquid stage to turn a solid right into a vapor to avoid causing more damage to your documents.  We also use the method of gamma irradiation when needed to clean and disinfect documents that are infected by bacteria from contaminated water.

Whether you are able to air-dry your books or they need a more specialized process by our professionals in order to be restored, these techniques will help to save your books and other documents after water damage has occurred in your home.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is also happy to help restore your property and your belongings after smoke and soot damage.  We work hard to make every form of an unexpected disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Preparation During a Power Outage

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

When a storm hits, it is common to experience a power outage that can last anywhere from hours to days.  It is important to have an emergency kit prepared for when this happens.  Stocking up on food, water and other supplies will eliminate some of the stress of the situation and keep you and your family safe until the storm and power outage is over.

The American Red Cross stresses the importance of an emergency kit in your home.  However, only half of homeowners in the United States are reported to own one.

The supplies you collect in your storm emergency kit should last a minimum of five days for everyone in your home.  The most critical supplies are listed below:

  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Battery-operated radio and clock
  • Flashlights
  • Can opener
  • List of emergency phone numbers
  • First aid kit

The storm restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County are always prepared to repair and restore your home from storm damage.  We also offer an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for businesses in our local area that includes important information such as emergency contacts, building access information and other critical elements of an emergency plan.

Preparing for Winter Storms

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

Preparing for a winter storm is the best way to stay safe during and after the storm has subsided.  A variety of property issues, accidents and injuries are common during a storm, but there are preventative actions you can take to eliminate those risks and lessen your worry when a winter storm hits.

  • Stock up on supplies including salt and shovels.  Salt driveways and walkways before the storm and be sure to keep them free of snow and ice.
  • Power outages are common, so it is important to have extra clothing or blankets ready to keep warm as well as supplies such as flashlights and enough food and water to remain safe.
  • Frozen pipes are another problem to look out for.  You should insulate any exposed pipes, close the indoor valves where water travels outside of the home, and open any outdoor valves to keep excess water from remaining and freezing.  If the pipes do freeze, you can use a heating pad or hot towels to thaw them.
  • To ensure that cold air doesn’t enter your home, seal any openings in your doorways and windows and repair any signs of damage to your walls or roof.  After a large snowstorm, snow should be removed from the roof in order to prevent a possible roof collapse or water leaking into the home as the snow melts.

Following these preventative guidelines and safety measures in the event of a storm can help keep you and your family safe as well as save you from water damage in your home.  Water and storm damage can be costly and overwhelming, so our team at SERVPRO of Cecil County is always here to help.  We offer 24-hour emergency services for our local homeowners and businesses in Cecil County.

Preventing Sump Pump Failure

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cecil County has been staying busy with the amount of calls we received from this weekend’s heavy downpour.  Homeowners called us to help with their water damaged basements, some of which were due to sump pump failures.

Failing to maintain your sump pump and inspect it for issues can cause a large problem during a rainstorm and lead to basement flooding like in many of our recent Cecil County emergencies.

Sump pumps can fail for many reasons but most issues can be prevented through maintenance and prevention.  The problems to look out for and solutions below can save you from an overwhelming water damage event in your home.

  • If you experience a power outage, your sump pump will not drain the water that leaks into your home.  This problem can be solved by installing a generator in order to keep the pump working in any size storm.
  • A mechanical issue can also be to blame. If the pump’s switch becomes lodged or debris gets clogged in the pump, the system will not work properly.  Cleaning and ensuring that the pump is positioned as it should be will eliminate this risk.
  • A frozen or clogged pipe can also cause your pump to stop working properly.  If your main discharge pipe freezes, having a backup line installed is an easy solution. Having a grate to catch unwanted debris will also prevent the pipe from clogging.
  • Be sure to choose the right pump for your home based on size and the amount of water that it may need to handle.  Choosing the wrong pump can potentially lead to an insufficient system.  Install the equipment properly to ensure its efficiency.
  • Maintenance is important.  Cleaning and maintaining the sump pump on a quarterly basis will keep the system running smoothly.

These steps will keep your sump pump running effectively and prevent water from leaking into your home during a storm.  SERVPRO of Cecil County has seen many homes left with water damage due to sump pump failure. These situations can be overwhelming and costly for homeowners, but our water and storm restoration professionals are here to clean up the mess.

Should you experience a sump pump failure or other water damage event in your home, call our team for our specialized care and guidance.  We’re here to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Dryer Vent Fire Safety

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

When it comes to home fires, sometimes we overlook the simple solutions that can prevent such a disaster.  One cause of home fires that can easily be prevented is a clogged dryer vent.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, about 17,000 dryer fires occur each year with dryer vents that are full of lint being the leading cause for these fires.  Lint can become highly flammable if left to collect.  Therefore, it is critical to clean your dryer vent regularly.

You should clean your dryer vents if your clothing doesn’t dry after a normal drying cycle or if a musty odor is left behind in your clothes.  If you notice excessive heat in the clothes or laundry room, debris is in the outside dryer vent opening, or you have a large amount of lint built up after each cycle, these are also signs of a clogged dryer vent.

To ensure the safety of your home, dryer vents should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year.  To clean a dryer vent:

  • Remove the outside cover on the vent and use a lint brush with an extendable handle to clean the inside of the pipe.
  • You can also use an air compressor or vacuum with an extendable brush to blow out the lint.
  •  The lint must be removed throughout the entire length of the vent.
  • Inspect the area around the dryer and remove any lint so it does not end up back in the dryer.

Hiring a professional is also an option for cleaning your dryer vents.  At SERVPRO of Cecil County, our cleaning and restoration professionals specialize in restoring and repairing properties after a fire damage event.  But our team is also here to help prevent fires from happening in the first place.  We offer dryer vent cleanings to our local homeowners and businesses in order to prevent a much larger problem in the future.  Call us today to learn more!

Winter Fire Safety

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

Winter is here, and despite the warmer than expected weather we’ve had lately, we still need to be prepared for the inevitable winter storms that will eventually take place this season.  SERVPRO of Cecil County knows that fires do not take a holiday during this time of year.  In fact, there are more home fires in the cold winter months than there is in any other season.

The National Fire Protection Association outlines the steps homeowners should take in order to practice the proper fire safety measures as well as remain safe during winter storms.

  • Test all smoke alarms on a monthly basis to ensure they are working properly.  Install carbon monoxide detectors and check them consistently as well.
  • Create an emergency escape plan for exiting your home, including a backup exit. Remove all ice and snow from your driveway and walkways to eliminate injuries.
  • Check that your house number can be seen from the street if emergency personnel will need to find you.
  • Be prepared for a power outage by having a supply of flashlights and batteries.  Use extra layers of clothing or blankets to stay warm.
  • Pay attention to news updates about the storm.
  • Check on your neighbors and provide them with assistance if needed.
  • Only use generators outdoors, and keep them at a distance from windows and doors.
  • Be aware of any downed wires, and report them to authorities.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room.

SERVPRO of Cecil County hopes that everyone stays warm and safe this winter!  Should you experience a fire-related incident this season, our fire restoration professionals are ready to help.  We offer 24/7 emergency services in fire and water damage, mold remediation and more in the Cecil County area.  Call us today at 410-620-3322 to learn more!

Steps to Take After a Water Damage Disaster

1/27/2020 (Permalink)

When water enters and damages your property, it is critical to take the proper precautions in order to prevent further water or even mold damage.  The water behind your walls or paneling can lead to mold growth if water isn't fully extracted or if the areas aren't fully dried after a water damage event.  To prevent further damage to your home, you should follow these steps:

  • Dry the areas immediately.
  • Check for musty odors that can be a sign of mold.
  • Inspect the exterior of your property to ensure that water is draining away from the home. If water is collecting around the property, drain the excess water since this can spread into the inside of the home.
  • Replace materials that can't be fully dried with materials that are less prone to mold.

These steps are important after a water damage event in order to prevent further signs of water or mold.  If you experience water or mold damage in your home, the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County are here to help! Contact us today at 410-620-3322 to learn more about our services!

Christmas Tree Fire Safety

12/26/2019 (Permalink)

It’s almost time to take down your live Christmas tree!  SERVPRO of Cecil County finds it just as hard to part with these festive trees, but we want to remind you that they can be a fire hazard if they are left up too long after the holiday season is over.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 1/3 of home fires in the United States that are caused by Christmas trees happen in the month of January, so it’s important to remove your tree before it dries out.  The drier your tree becomes, the more you will have a risk of a fire in your home.

Please dispose of your tree promptly after the holidays.  The NFPA recommends using your community’s recycling program, rather than simply placing them outside.

To limit the risk of a fire even further, do not unplug the light cords from an electrical outlet by pulling the cord.  This can damage the cord and increase the risk of an electrical fire.  When packing up lights, inspect them for any damages.  Wrap each set of lights separately and store them in a dry place where they will not be damaged by water.

At SERVPRO of Cecil County, we understand how unexpectedly a fire can occur, and we are always here to help. We hope everyone stays safe during this holiday season.

Mold Growth in Earleville

11/21/2019 (Permalink)

This mold growth was found in a home in Earleville after they experienced water damage.  The homeowner’s air conditioning unit in the upstairs bedroom had previously leaked down the drywall down into the first floor and basement.  Once the service was complete, the drywall was removed in order to be replaced.  While doing this, a significant amount of mold growth was found.  SERVPRO of Cecil County received the call to perform mold remediation for this property, and we were happy to get started immediately.

Our mold remediation professionals contained the affected areas in order to prevent the spread of the mold.  We then used our specialized filtration equipment in order to capture any signs of mold spores in the air.  Our antifungal and antimicrobial treatments eliminated other signs of mold as well as prevented new mold spores from forming.  Our team then cleaned and disinfected the affected areas in addition to removing any odors caused by the mold growth.

The home was back to normal, and the homeowner couldn’t have been happier with our service!  We are thrilled that he was satisfied with our work, and we hope to do the same for all of our local home and business owners.  If you experience mold damage, SERVPRO of Cecil County is ready at a moment’s notice to help restore the property for you.  We offer 24/7 emergency service for our local community.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

11/6/2019 (Permalink)

With winter approaching, it is critical to protect your home or business from the frigid temperatures.  Frozen pipes can be a large issue during the upcoming months.  When pipes break, water damage follows.  SERVPRO of Cecil County restores many homes and businesses from water damage caused by frozen pipes.  However, there are ways you can prevent this common winter disaster by properly maintaining your pipes.

  • Insulate any exposed pipes.
  • Close indoor valves that supply water outdoors. Open the outdoor valves to drain any excess water.
  • Disconnect any outside hoses from your hose bib.
  • In dangerously low temperatures, allow cold water to drip from the faucets. This will allow water to continuously flow through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
  • To thaw frozen pipes, use a heating pad or towels soaked in hot water.

Water damage caused by frozen pipes is a common issue in the winter months.  If you have any issues with frozen pipes, our water restoration professionals will be there to help.  We offer 24/7 emergency services for our local customers when they experience a fire, water or mold damage event. Contact us at 410-620-3322 to learn more.

Cooking and Fire Safety

11/5/2019 (Permalink)

Cooking is a leading cause of household fires in the United States.  This makes it critical to use precautions when preparing meals for you and your family.  With the holidays getting closer, this is more important than ever.

To keep you and your family safe, follow these cooking safety measures outlined by the National Fire Protection Association.

  • When cooking, always stay in the kitchen and do not leave food unattended.

  • Keep flammable materials away from the stove and oven, such as towels and oven mitts.

Preventing Summer Mold Growth

5/28/2019 (Permalink)

During the warmer months ahead, mold growth is a common problem among many homeowners.  However, there are preventative measures you can take this summer in order to stop a mold infestation before it starts.

  • Inspect your home for moisture.  In order to limit the amount of moisture in your home, regularly wipe down the interior of your property as well as run fans or a dehumidifier if needed.
  • Allow the air to circulate throughout your home using open vents and fans.  This makes it more difficult for mold to grow as well.
  • Lower the temperature in your home.  This will make mold less likely to form due to cooler air and less moisture.

Following these simple procedures during the summer months will keep your home cooler, but also mold free.  If you need help with a mold issue, contact the mold restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County at 410-620-3322.  We’re here to help so you can enjoy your summer!

How To Prevent Mold During the Rainy Season

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

Spring is here and with this rainy season, comes the increased risk of mold in your home.  Despite the wet weather, there are preventative measures you can take to stop the spread of mold before it starts.

  • Use an air purifier to help trap and remove mold spores as well as prevent them from entering the home.  They also help remove debris and dust that can invade your ducts and circulate through the air.
  • You want to keep your home dry since mold feeds on wet areas and moisture.  Inspect your home for leaks and fix any issues.  Use fans to prevent moisture on walls and other surfaces.
  • Be aware of warning signs of moisture or mold.  Mold can grow rapidly, therefore finding these issues early can save you from a mold infestation in the future.

If you have a mold problem, contact the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County at (410) 620-3322.  Our team can make your mold disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing Grill Fire Damage

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

With summer just around the corner, grilling season will soon be in full swing.  While we look forward to the upcoming barbecue season, SERVPRO of Cecil County would like to remind you to be safe and use precautions when cooking with your grill.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 9,600 home fires are started by grills every year.  In addition, over 16,000 people need medical care per year due to burns and other incidents involving grills.  Here are some steps you can take to prevent a burn or potential fire in your own backyard.

  • Do not leave the grill unattended, and keep a spray bottle nearby in case of sudden flareups.
  • Remove excess fat from your meat since the extra fat can cause the flames to rise.
  • Clean your grill to remove all grease and fatty residue left behind from previous cookouts. Doing so will decrease the risk of a grease fire.
  • If you own a gas grill, inspect your propane tank for signs of damage that can cause serious fire damage.

By following these precautions, you can safely grill for your family and friends without risk of injury.  If you experience a fire at your home, call the fire restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County.  We are happy to make any size fire disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Cecil County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.  Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry.  As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.  Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Cecil County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Safety Tips to Protect Your Restaurant Business

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

Restaurants always have the risk of fire damage since heat is a key ingredient in this industry.  There are actions you can take to prevent this risk by following these steps.

  • Install an automatic fire-suppression system in the kitchen. In the event of a fire, this system will release chemicals to put out the flames and shut off the electrical power to other cooking equipment to prevent further damage.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. A Class K fire extinguisher should be used in the kitchen, while a Class ABC fire extinguisher should be used for any other fires not located in the kitchen.
  • Regularly maintain all cooking equipment and exhaust systems.
  • Train your employees in proper fire prevention techniques.

Following these procedures will save your restaurant from devastating fire damage and keep your business, employees and customers safe. If your business does suffer from fire loss, contact the fire restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County.  Our emergency services can get your business back up and running quickly.

Does Your Home Have a Mold Problem?

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors.  This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.  Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.  Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is not true.  Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture.  Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Understanding the Types of Mold

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can be a scary topic to think about, but it is important to know some of the different types of mold and where they can form in order to stop a serious mold problem in its tracks. Below are some of the main types of mold that can form in your home.

The most common type of mold is Aspergillus. This type of mold forms in the soil and in the air. It grows on many surfaces and in places with high humidity.

Stachybotrys Atra is another type of mold that is more commonly known as black mold. This type of infestation is usually feared since it is greenish black and can appear without other clear signs of mold being present. This mold grows where there are water leaks or in areas of high humidity.

Cladosporium is more difficult to identify, but can take the form of green, black or brown spots. This mold grows on walls, wood, vents and in damp areas. A mold professional can inspect this infestation for you in order to determine exactly what type of mold you have in your home.

By learning about the different types of mold that can grow in your home, you will be better prepared for preventing mold growth. Every mold remediation project is different, but the professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County can help make all of them “Like it never even happened.”

Is Your Roof Ready for Rain?

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Strong rainstorms can bring extensive destruction to your home if your roof isn’t prepared for them.  You should always check your roof for damages or leaks before the problem gets worse.  To make sure your home is storm ready, there are signs to look for and quick fixes that you can apply before hiring a professional.

Regularly inspect your roof

  • Look for leaks and signs of damage.  The decking, insulation and sheet rock should not be saturated or appear rotted.
  • Check the attic for signs of water dripping or stains which can indicate a leak in the roof.
  • Check for moisture in the pipes, the roof joints and around the vents and chimney.  Moisture can reveal signs of a possible leaky roof.
  • Look for shingles that are out of place.

Quick Repairs

  • Move branches away from the roof.
  • Fix and replace broken shingles.
  • Repair your gutter system if needed.
  • If the problem is worse than a simple fix, hire a professional to repair your roof.

If you experience storm damage from a leaky roof, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County at (410) 620-3322.  We provide emergency services for your storm disaster.

Signs of Winter Storm Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

With winter approaching, there’s often more to worry about than shoveling snow.  Winter storms and temperatures can cause extensive damage to your home, but SERVPRO of Cecil County is ready to help if you experience a winter disaster from common issues including the following.

Frozen Pipes

Brisk temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and break, which can lead to flooding in your home.

Ice Dams

When snow melts unevenly and freezes at the edge of your roof, an ice dam is created which prevents melted snow from draining off of the roof.  The water can then leak under the shingles and into the home and cause significant water damage.

Roof Damage

Snow and ice can damage your roof and even cause the roof to collapse if enough weight has accumulated.  Water can get into cracks and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks.

Winter can be an extremely dangerous time for your home. Be sure to check the pipes and roof of your property for signs of potential water damage and warning signs.  If you experience a storm disaster, SERVPRO of Cecil County can restore your home “Like it never even happened." Call us at (410) 620-3322.

Preventing Winter Mold

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Now that the temperature is dropping, you may start to wonder what you can do to keep your home healthy and prepared for the colder months.  While mold does not occur more frequently in the winter compared to other times of the year in a controlled indoor setting, there are problems to look out for in the colder months that can affect the moisture in your home and cause mold growth.  Common winter problems including frozen pipes and improper insulation can lead to more than simply a cold home.

Mold can be a scary concept to any homeowner, but here are some steps you can take to prevent mold from growing due to the brisk temperatures.  Ensure that your gutters are clear to help prevent ice from building up and that your dehumidifiers are running in lower levels of your home.  Check that your attic and any pipes in your crawl spaces are insulated to help prevent pipe bursts or condensation.  Following these procedures will keep your home properly insulated and free of mold caused by uncontrolled moisture levels.

If you have any questions about mold, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County at (410) 620-3322.  Our mold remediation experts can handle any size mold disaster.

How To Reduce Damage After a Fire

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

When your home experiences fire damage, the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County can help.  However, there are actions you can take to prevent further damage until we arrive.

To stop soot from spreading into the air and on surfaces, limit your movement in the home and place old linens on carpets and furniture.  Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop soot particles from traveling in or out of your HVAC system.

Do not attempt to clean any walls as doing so improperly can cause smearing.  Do not clean your carpets or any electronic items that were close to fire, heat or water.

If your ceiling is wet, do not use the ceiling fans since wiring may be damaged, and air movement can cause soot to spread throughout the home.

By using these guidelines, you can prevent your home from more damages.  If you experience any fire damage, call SERVPRO of Cecil County.  We specialize in restoring your home from fire, water and mold disasters.

What To Do if Your Ceiling is Leaking

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

It can be extremely stressful and confusing when you discover a leak in your ceiling.  The damages to your home will only get worse if you do not confront the problem immediately.  Below, we outline some steps you can follow to fix the leak before further destruction.

Poke a Hole

Use a screwdriver or other sharp tool to poke a hole in the middle of the water stain.  The hole will drain the water in the ceiling and air out the drywall which will prevent further water damage.

Catch the Water

Use a bucket to catch the falling water and towels to soak up any excess drips.

Turn a Fan On

The fan will dry the area which is important in minimizing damages.

Following these steps may be the difference between a small leak and extensive water damage.  If your home suffers from a leaky ceiling, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County at (410) 620-3322.  We can handle any size water disaster in your home.

Signs of Water Damage

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Water can cause extensive damage to your home when the problem is not taken care of.  Water damage can appear due to flooding or even a small leak in your home.  The water restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County are trained to handle any size water disaster if you experience this problem in your home.  Fortunately, there are signs you can look for to stop water damage in its tracks before the damage is in need of our restoration services.

Walls

Look for water stains on the walls and ceilings as well as around the windows and door frames.  If stains are present in any of these areas, you may have a leaking pipe inside the wall.  Check for cracks in the drywall as well.

Floors

Look for warping or buckling of the floors.  Check for stains and the smell of dampness.

Pipes

Inspect pipes for corrosion, leaks or water stains.  Ensure the caulking is not missing or loose.  Check the water heater for wet spots and rust.

Basement and Attic

Inspect the basement and attic for cracks, stains, rust, dampness, mold or odors.

Exterior

Check the roof for damages and missing or cracked shingles.  Look for standing water outside of your home, which could be due to poor drainage or other issues.

Inspect your home extensively and you will prevent further water damage from occurring.  If you experience any water damage in your home, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County at (410) 620-3322.  We can restore any size water disaster for you.

The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is a proud supporter of our first responders throughout the country who put their lives on the line every day.  To show our gratitude, we held the first ever SERVPRO First Responder Bowl to honor our national heroes.

The First Responder Bowl is more than just a college football game, and SERVPRO of Cecil County was happy to be a part of it.  Our franchise got in on the action by sending part of our very own team to the big game.  Our Marketing Manager, Cliff Masscotte and our Sales Representative, Brian Arencibia were selected to attend the game and help unfurl the American flag on the field with many others who are proud to work at SERVPRO.  They were honored to be chosen to do so and to take part in this event for our first responders.

The game wasn’t quite what we expected, but it was exciting nonetheless.  Due to severe weather conditions, the unfurling of the American flag and the flyover of C-1370 military cargo planes were cancelled as well as the game itself in the first quarter.  The unanimous decision was made by emergency personnel, both teams, ESPN and Cotton Bowl Stadium Staff for the safety of the fans and players.  We were disappointed that this big event did not turn out like we had hoped.  However, the game was to honor our first responders, and we achieved that in a new and unique way.  SERVPRO of Cecil County is excited to do the same at next year’s big game.  Rain or shine, we will continue to thank our first responders both locally and nationally in any way we can.

The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl was held in Dallas, Texas on December 26th in the famous Cotton Bowl Stadium and aired live on ESPN.

Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is around the corner and we at SERVPRO of Cecil County are excited to take part in this annual tradition of great food, friends and family.  While this time of year is truly a time to celebrate and give thanks, our fire restoration specialists see the holiday a little differently.  According to The National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires in the United States.  Our fire restoration professionals are all too familiar with the devastation a house fire can bring to your home, but there are steps you can take to prevent a fire disaster from ruining your perfect holiday.

  • Stay in the kitchen and check on the food periodically.
  • Young children should always be kept away from the stove and any other fire hazards.
  • The floor should be clear of any items that can cause a potential slip or fall.
  • It is also a good idea to ensure that your smoke alarms are properly working.

By following these safety tips, we guarantee that you and your family will have a safe Thanksgiving. Should you experience fire damage in your home, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County and we’ll make your holiday disaster “Like it never even happened".

Smoke Alarm Safety

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

No one wants to think about a fire striking their home or business, but preparation can be the key to keeping everyone safe and minimizing damages. The National Fire Protection Association states that smoke alarms should always be properly installed and maintained in order to do just that.

For Homes

Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom and on every floor of the property.  Be sure to test smoke alarms each month using the test button.  Replace the batteries every year and the entire alarm every ten years.

For Commercial

You should check your state requirements to ensure all codes are met.  These smoke alarms typically do not require as much testing and can activate throughout the building if smoke is detected in one area.

By following these steps, you can protect your home or business from a devastating fire loss.  Should you experience any fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County.  We can help make your disaster “Like it never even happened”.

We Can Restore Your Documents Too!

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

After a fire or water loss, important documents are often damaged and in danger of being non-restorable.  As a leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Cecil County knows timely mitigation is the key to recovering damaged items before it’s too late.  Water or smoke damaged paper can rapidly deteriorate, but with proper handling, our restoration professionals can help you recover your important files utilizing a variety of methods.

Vacuum Freeze Drying

This is the most effective way to restore documents after a water loss.  Our Document Restoration Team uses sublimation, which skips the liquid stage to turn a solid right into a vapor to avoid causing more damage.

Digitizing

Keeping your important documents on a computer is a good idea to eliminate the stress and work of replacing and losing files in an emergency.

Gamma Irradiation

This method is used to clean and disinfect documents that are infected by bacteria. This is frequently used in events where sewage or flood water are involved.

Certified Destruction

Often, documents must be completely destroyed to protect a business’s liabilities, image or other information.  We guarantee that your sensitive files will be disposed of properly.

To learn more about our Document Restoration services, contact SERVPRO of Cecil County.  We offer 24-hour emergency services in our local community.

Where did SERVPRO get its green color?

10/26/2018 (Permalink)

The restoration crews of SERVPRO of Cecil County are always close by, helping to recover disasters in your area from fire, water and mold loss.  It’s hard to miss our green service vehicles as they drive through your local community.  But where did the green color come from?

In the early 1970s, the founders of SERVPRO® used a color chip paint sample chart to identify the most eye-catching color.  It was a highly technical process.  The founders showed the chart to as many people as they could and asked, “Which color on this chart would be impossible to miss?”  By a wide margin, the color most identified was 1970 rally green, a color used on Porsche 911 automobiles.

Now used on entire fleets of vehicles in every SERVPRO franchise across the nation from production vans to disaster recovery storm trailers, our vehicles are prepared for any size disaster.

Flooded Basement in Cecil County

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

This September, one of our Elkton customers called SERVPRO of Cecil County when they discovered that their basement had been flooded and mold had grown on the walls.  To be expected, the homeowner was very concerned about the water damage.  Fortunately, our highly trained water restoration technicians were able to diminish their fears and assess the damage of the flooding.

After extracting all of the water from the basement, the crew then began mold remediation by utilizing our HEPA vacuums to capture any remaining mold spores.  Our technicians then removed any airborne odors and cleaned the entire basement and all affected contents in addition to repairing all damages.  The customer was extremely satisfied with our work and will use SERVPRO of Cecil County for their future restoration needs.

Affected Kitchen

Late this summer, SERVPRO of Cecil County was  called to an Elkton home that experienced a grease fire in their kitchen. After leaving a pan on the stove, the kitchen was extensively burned along with other areas of the home being affected. Grease fires are a serious safety hazard. Here’s how you can prevent them in your home.

  1. Safety First! Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen or nearby.
  2. Be Cautious! Do not leave the room when a hot pan is on the stove.
  3. Be Alert! If the grease starts to smoke, turn down the heat.
  4. Be Prepared! Keep anything combustible away from the stove such as dish towels.
  5. Be Smart! If a pan catches fire, do not throw water on it. Instead, smother the flames by using an oven mitt to place the lid on top of the pan.

By following these precautions, you will keep your home safe from grease fires and be able to enjoy your kitchen for years to come.

Exterior of affected units

Did you know that SERVPRO of Cecil county is a 24/7 restoration company?  One of our tag lines "Faster to any size disaster" was certainly put to the test when we got this phone call from a commercial residential apartment complex.

At approx. 9:30pm we received an emergency phone call from a property in North East.  Cliff Masscotte, our Marketing Manager, was first to the scene at approx 10:00pm.  He walked with the Maintenance Manager to assess the damage until the crew and project managers arrived.  Once they were on scene, we had our machines up and running to start the drying process.

A total of 6 units were affected and demolition had to be done from water damage.  SERVPRO of Cecil County will be handling the repairs to the units as well with our construction division.  Once completed, we will have made it "Like it never even happened"!

Homeless Encampment Clean-out

7/12/2018 (Permalink)

campsite in the woods Homeless Encampment

SERVPRO of Cecil County recently received a phone call from a commercial business asking us if we did clean-ups and clean-outs, our answer:  Of Course!

Upon asking further questions we realized this would not be the typical clean-up job.  This commercial business wanted us to clean up a homeless encampment close to their facility.  As you can see from the picture, it was quite the job.  However, this is only one picture of the many that we took.  To see the rest, check out our Facebook page HERE.

We did treat this as a bio-hazard condition based on the amount of material we had to move.  We had 2 bobcats, 5 dumpsters, and a dozen crew members who tackled this job and not only helped our valued commercial client, but cleaned up nature as well!
