Guidelines for Fire Safety

Our fire restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cecil County know better than most that fire damage can be extremely overwhelming for those involved.
Before you need to call for fire restoration services, we want to ensure that you and your family or employees are safe from harm. The American Red Cross provides important fire safety guidelines that should be taken before, during and after a fire that will help to keep you safe and prepared.
Before a fire, you should take the steps necessary in order to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Install smoke alarms on every floor. Test the alarms on a monthly basis, and change the batteries as needed. Plan and practice an escape plan with all family members or employees.
In the event of a fire, leave the building immediately. Do not open doors that feel warm. Do not leave the building through smoke-filled areas unless it is the only option. If that is the case, be sure to stay low to the ground and underneath the smoke. If there is no escape route possible, keep doors closed and place a wet towel under the door. Call the fire department and open a window to call for help.
After a fire, you should cool and cover any burns you may have and seek medical help if the condition is serious. Communicate with others that you are safe and do not reenter the property until you are told by authorities that it is safe to do so.
These guidelines are critical in maintaining your safety in the event of a fire. Once the damage is done and emergency personnel has done their part, our fire restoration professionals are here to help with the rest!
